Are the apps preinstalled on the SSD?

Just ordered a 27" 3.4Ghz i7 :)

Do the apps etc come installed on the SSD? I called Apple and the guy didnt get my question.

If they are on the SSD they will open quicker than on the SATA but he kept saying the OS is installed "over both drives". I kept saying I wasnt talking about the OS essentially but where the core services were installed.

I have ordered a 1TB SATA plus 256SSD. Will the OS/apps be on the SSD?
 
Yeh well it makes sense to do it but the SSD is classed as a 'secondary' drive so wasn't quite sure.

You say he said the operating system was installed over both drives. The rumors could be true about the new chipset combining both drives as if they are one, like a raid array. This chipset would allow SSD and HDD act as one. The iMac has this Intel chipset. This could be why the Ssd iMac was delayed.

Didn't think of that.
But if Apple would offer such option, wouldn't they advertise it somehow?
 
The SSDs used in the hybrid mode are small SSDs, like 32GB. It just loads the most frequently used apps onto the SSD from the HDD. You don't actually see two Hard Drives with this approach. Apple is using a 256GB SSD, so I don't think it will be the hybrid SSD+HDD.
 
OS is installed on SSD. I don't know whether or not the home folder is on the HDD or in the usual place. The HDD might just be blank.
 
I would also like to know what will be the final answer.

I see few versions of the answer in this thread and a person in a reseller store told me that it will be up to me to choose where the Apps are installed, which is yet another different answer...

It will be nice if someone with SSD and good knowledge can share the experience.
 
Fresh from the factory everything is installed on the SSD. I have no idea why anyone would think otherwise.

Its a 256 gig SSD. Thats 226 more gigs than OS X needs for install.

hybrid drives are so-so at best -- google for the benchmarks. They help here and there with specific drive tasks -- but very specific. They do not show the blazing fast performance a pure SSD shows.
 
I've got a quote on a new BTO iMac waiting for final approval for work, so I've been on the phone a couple of times with the small business reps at the Cambridgeside (Mass) store.

The guy there told me the OS is installed on the SSD, the home folder is on the HDD, and /Applications is on the SSD.

ie - it's set up just how most folks would want it.

I have not been able to confirm.

Off topic, but nonetheless, after you ordered your machine, did you receive an estimated time of arrival? I want to order the same machine that you did and I am wondering if it will actually take the entire 4-6 weeks. Thanks is advance! :)

I think they're just waiting on Intel to announce the chipset.

Somewhat similar to THunderB except there's no way to physically "hide" the new tech aside from not being available yet or playing "dumb".

No don't think so. The guy was genuinely stumped by my question :rolleyes: I hope its not like an array anyway. I want the SSD for the apps and the 1TB for my iTunes library etc.

Thanks. I know how to do it but I just wanted to make sure the 'sensible' part was already done for me. i.e. the core bits on the SSD to help with speed.

I still cant believe the apple guy didnt know what I was on about though. When installing OSX you have a choice of which drive to put it on so I asked where was OSX installed on the machine. After a brief pause he said "er... both of them" :rolleyes: I suppose he is technically correct but I knew not to dig further lol.

Thanks for the spreadsheet link guys its quite interesting how many have opted for the 27 i7.

EDIT: Went in to store to have a play with one and asked why there's a delay on SSDs. They guy said "I think it's because Lion has trim support, but I really don't know". Seems a credible response, so we may end up with Lion on our i7's :)
