Are the graphics that much better?

I have the first generation aluminum iMac. I had always thought I might upgrade with this update, but the specs didn't impress me too terribly.

I have the ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory. Does the $1499 or $1799 model have graphics way better than this? I noticed in the graphs comparing graphics they compare it to a 2400 non-pro 128 MB memory model.

Enough to consider an upgrade, or should I just wait until they put quad cores in these or something?

The rest of the system is 2.4 GHZ, 4 GB of memory. Plus, I have extra display, so 24-inches I *could* do without for now.

Keep your eye on barefeats.com, they usually come out with some good benchmarks. There is a 4-6 week lead time on the 4850 ATi based iMac, so they may wait until that is released to do a full group test.

I wouln't buy a new iMac now, if I were you. The $1499 and $1799 models have better/faster processors than your mac. But the graphic card in the 1499$ (9400M) is not as good as the ATI 2600 PRO. And the GeForce GT 120M in the 1799$ model is not that fast, it's not worth an upgrade.

If you're happy with the performance of your mac wait untill the next update. You wouldn't feel any difference in performance if you buy a new iMac now.

Thanks. I normally don't mind the cost of upgrading, but I agree, it just seems like right now you really wouldn't get much of anything, for the upgrade. Appreciate the help.

I don't know to much about the video card speed, but the cpu's are faster. i would waite unless you need a new imac right now.

The 4850 is significantly faster like 2-4x faster but it is up to you if you want to spend that money
