I have a 2008 3ghz octocore MP. It has a 4870 ATI card in it. On top of my desk is a NEC PA271W (27") monitor and a PA241W (24") monitor.

Sitting in front of all this, I feel like I'm sitting in front of an oven. Not just during rendering, when I would expect, but even just sitting here doing nothing other than displaying a web page and no CPU use.

With all the focus on power and efficiency, do I have any hope that a new system might not run as hot, at least at idle?

I'm going to buy one anyway, but just curious and hopeful that I'll see some electrical/BTU savings.

While idling ..... yes. :)

Some of the candidate AMD 7000 series opitions. There is an idle chart here.

but depends upon the load

P.S. the NEC monitors are probably contributing to the issue too though.
