I just ordered a mid-2012 MP to replace a mid-2010, and the seller's description was "Fair condition, but functions perfectly". Most of the damage to the case seems to be to the accessible side, so can I just replace the removable panel on the 2012 with the same panel from the 2010?

The 2010 and 2012 are the very same computer. All the parts are the same.

If just that case's door, you can buy the spare parts for 2009, 2010, 2012 Mac Pro, they are identical. Just get the cheapest will do.

Thanks for the speedy replies. I suspected that was the case, but I know there are important differences between the 2010/12 and previous models of the Mac Pro, e.g., I once bought 2 different sets of drive sleds that were, apparently, NOT for the 2010 and the 2012, and they wouldn't fit the 2010. Too long or too short. So thanks for the information.

2006/2007/2008 Mac Pros use the short sled, 2009/2010/2012 use the long one. All case pieces are the same for 2009/2010/2012.

2009 to 2012 cases and fans are identical.

I just built in a 2009 MP in a 2012 case.
So you built a functioning Mac Pro inside a 2012 case? When I have asked about this subject on the Mac forums, every responder tells me they wouldn't dare remove the innards and replace them, for fear of misplacing wires, parts, screws. Strictly hands off. How tricky was it? How long did it take?

Not a second longer than if it was a 2009 case

2009 to 2012 (MP 4.1 and 5.1) cases are identical. The Boards are not interchangable, tho. For a quick test ok, smc goes to panic mode an all fans run at full speed. But thats not the topic here.

Not to confuse to MP 1.1/2.1 and 3.1, those are very different, case and board wise.

So if the short sled mounts in 2006/2007/2008 are swapped with the long sled mounts in 2009/2010/2012 then all would be the same?

Asking because I have a 2007 MP case that is dentless and I want to put my 2010 MP guts in it…

No, the case is completely different internally.
