CONTEXT: I was having trouble quitting TextEdit on my mac and when I went to force quit the application I noticed that the TextEdit icon was the same as Google Chrome (see image below). I wasn't working on HTML and didn't even realize that you can edit and open these files in Google Chrome until I looked up this oddity today. Thus, I was in no way working with the both of them together- just taking misc notes and researching things online.

QUESTION: Are these mac applications (TextEdit and Google Chrome) connected in any way? & If not, could this be a sign of malware or something along those lines?

Thank you in advance for any help or answers for this!

No. The apps are not connected. Probably not malware. Try this:

to reset an app icon on macOS
  1. Open Finder.
  2. Click Applications.
  3. Right click on the icon you'd like to change.
  4. Select Get Info.
  5. Click the small icon at the top of the window.
  6. Tap the Delete key on your keyboard.
  7. Close the app, and if needed, clear it from your dock.
  8. Reopen your app.
