Thinking of the netflix app specifically but others as well.

Any news on that front?

Edit: speaking about apps that know your on 3g and won't work because of it like on the iphone

Over 3g you have iTunes limited to 20mb the same as the iPhone and websites see the browser as a mobile platform at the moment for 3g and wifi (most offering a full site link at the bottom).

BBC iplayer will only work over wifi too.

YouTube still falls back to low quality over 3g.

Other than that I can't think of any other sites.

The list of apps that stream media on Wifi vs 3g is probably fairly long, I don't know about them all but specific to hardware, 3g model has GPS as the 3GS iPhone does. Wifi model uses cell towers to approximate your location. 3G model will be accurate enough for Navigation GPS apps, Wifi may not.

On thing to remember is with the larger screen, more pixels, it's more data to stream so apps even like Slingplayer that just recently were allowed to stream over 3g on the iPhone maybe limited to Wifi only on the iPad. We won't know for sure until they come out, but would not surprise me if that is the case.

One way to get around 3g limitations is to get a device like the mifi from verizon which acts like a mini wifi hotspot. This way the iPad thinks its on wifi, but the data is actually coming from 3g. The downside is that it cost more for the data plan, I think like $60 a month vs the iPad 3g $30 a month plan. Also, the mifi has its own battery and you have to carry around an extra device.

I can use my jailbroken iphone and tether to the ipad, but then you have a bandwidth issue. Can netflix stream over 3g?
