I understand to some degree about Mini LED displays, but wondered if there is still the possibility of dead pixels?

Dead pixels are an absolute no-no for me, and is the first thing I check for on a new device.

If anyone can enlighten me, I’d be grateful.

Many thanks.

MiniLED is the same, dead pixels are definitely possible, and even dead pixels in the backlight. Nobody has made an always perfect panel yet. That said, I've seen way less dead pixels than people complaining about them, but if it happens, send it back as defective and get another one. The normal LED laptop i'm typing on right now is over 4 years old and no dead pixels.

I have no dead pixels on any of my devices.

I check meticulously when I get a new device.

If I find one, it goes back. Once you see them, you can’t unsee them.

Thankfully, I guess display manufacturers have improved their processes to the point where dead/stuck pixels are rare. I remember back in the Powerbook days, it almost seemed rare to get a machine with no bad pixels. Sometimes you could massage them back to life, usually not though. It was the most stressful part of buying a new computer (for me at least). Heck, sometimes I'd pull it out right in the parking lot of the store to do an initial check (and then scrutinize more carefully once I got it home), and dreaded having to fight with customer service in having to return/exchange it (since it was stated that a certain number of bad pixels was to be expected). You might be faced with the gamble of, "do I return a machine with a dead pixel near the edge and risk getting a replacement that's even worse, with several stuck pixels right in the middle?").

But in the past 10-12 years or so, between me and my family members, I think I've bought probably 8-9 Apple laptops, and not one of them (knock on wood) has had any such issues. I've never seen them on my iPads or iPhones either.

What's wrong with your (refunded) M1 MacBook?

Just looking to buy one, thus the curiosity.

So you are lucky. I always thought that I was always the same lucky. Last year I bought a new MBP 16". Within that month, my screen panel broke down and there were many striped colors. Of course, all of this. Completed by the warranty.

Well, my shiny new MacBook Pro 16" M1 Max has a dead pixel. First one ever in a Mac for me. So sad and not sure what to do (returning and buying a replacement machine would mean waiting 5 - 6 weeks until it ships, apparently...).

Email Apple and see what they can do

Any pictures on what it looks like and how bad it is? Thanks!!

It seems like it's one dead green subpixel, because it's black on a green background. It's difficult to take a good photo of it, because it's so small (mouse cursor for size) and the iOS camera app likes to smooth it out in the resulting photo. On a white background it looks a bit like a little dust speck, except you can't wipe it off. :/

I would take it to an Apple store if you can and show them, they should replace it (though not sure how long that would take)

I opened a support ticket last week via the Apple Support Chat and had the chance to upload a photo of the issue, but unfortunately the chat support wasn't able to help much except refer me to an Apple Store for further diagnosis.

As I couldn't get a good appointment before my return window would end, I called the Apple Store hotline a few days later again and told them the case number that I got from the above chat support and that there would be a photo of the issue that they could check out. They looked at it and decided that it's definitely a hardware issue and offered to do an express replacement so that I can keep my current MBP until the replacement arrives in a few weeks without any charge. ? I think this is the best possible outcome. Great customer service this time.

So I have the same machine MBP 16” 2021 M1 Pro.

Machine is 5 weeks old, and I have just noticed a dead pixel / dust under the screen. Seems to be a single pixel!?

I have the apple polishing cloth, I tried wiping over it which hasn’t done anything. I checked carefully with my nail to see if it’s a scratch but you don’t feel anything.

Got my machine booked in for Apple tomorrow.

Any thoughts as to what this is? - You will need to zoom the photo in.

dead pixel - return new.
So I went to Apple today and it was a dead pixel indeed.

Currently being sent away to their main repair centre in the UK to have a new screen / lid fitted as it’s all one complete part.

Total cost = £674.17 (ex 20% VAT tax)
£800.00 (with 20% VAT tax)

If you don’t have applecare for these machines, I highly recommend getting it.

As my machine is 5 weeks old, the standard 1 year warranty has covered this, but even with Applecare it drops the repair price down massively.

Roll on 8 days so that I can have my machine back!

Wait, you paid 800 pounds for this on a brand new macbook pro? Holy smokes...I'd be getting a replacement unit for free.

Wait man, why did you have to pay? It's defective and it's within the 1-year warranty.

Edit: seen the above post.

I'd like to add my experience to this thread. I have a MBP 14 (2021 M1 pro) and I'm going to sell it as fast as I can. The reason is that in August, one week after I bought it, a cluster of pixels got stuck, so I went back to the seller and had it completely replaced (not the screen, but the laptop itself). Then the new one after something like 4 months got a cluster of dead pixels; I've brought my Mac to an Apple store to have its screen replaced, though, seeing what could it cost to replace a screen (in EU it's €680, half a pay of a teacher) I've decided what I said, just sell it before it gives me the same kind of problem again after the warranty expires. I just hope it's not a common problem buried by Apple just like the butterfly keyboard issue...
Though I have to say that I'm deeply saddened by the fact that the product didn't stand my expectations and my experience with an old (and beaten) MBP 2012, which is still 100% working as intended after 10 years.
