I see, I assumed that was what this was about but wasn't sure.
Outlook is a fine client. Any reason you want to go 3rd party in the first place?

Yes, Outlook works well for others. I've used it and it works well for me.

But the OP is specifically asking for email apps that don't mine your emails for data they can sell, or similar privacy concerns.

Is Outlook known for protecting people's private information better than the typical free 3rd-party email app, or as well as the typical paid 3rd-party email app? I don't know, but I'm guessing that's what the OP is most interested in finding out.

There are never any guarantees what someone is doing that you cannot see. The only one I can guarantee is Apple's Mail app as there is no Apple server involved; the Mail app connects directly to your mail servers you use.

My GUESS is that Microsoft doesnt need to mine email data in the Outlook app. They are selling tens-hundreds of millions of people Outlook services and the app is to keep you using those paid Outlook services- in their ecosystem.

Developing the app and keeping it updated is likely a drop in the revenue bucket.

I would venture to guess someone like Microsoft, worth hundreds of billions, needs money less than some small company like Readdle or Edison; and would be far less likely to resort to desperate measures to generate revenue.

It's all best guess though. Sadly this isnt the first time Edison was caught with their hand in the privacy scandal cookie jar and people STILL somehow used/praised the app; and then are somehow shocked now it's repeating itself. Very sad, and I guess the old fool me once no longer applies.

Ugh I can't believe Spark. Deleting now. I was upset that the Junk filter wasn't working after marking numerous emails so this will be easy to go back now to Mail. Better to just stick with Apple apps for privacy. So disappointed in Readdle now after supporting them for so long.

The age old unless you are paying for the product you are the product applies

There is obviously no proof of this. But Readdle can "pwomise" all it wants on its social media it doesnt sell data etc. We heard the same thing from Edison; in fact they touted privacy in their app and website. And look what that really meant.

But then, reasonable person view, what is the Spark business model then? Selling a few dollar per month team subscriptions to MAYBE a few thousand people which a tens/hundreds of thousand use it free? And that supports a whole company with 150 employees? (yes they have other apps but still, email uses a lot of server resources)

Me thinks not and that anonymized data is being sold off.

The only way to provide push mail for 3rd party services like gmail or yahoo in iOS Outlook is for Microsoft to create a replica of your Gmail/yahoo mailbox within your office 365/outlook.com exchange account. When you login to gmail/yahoo, Microsoft gets an access token then uses that in a webapp to fetch the data from your gmail/yahoo mailbox and copy it into your Microsoft mailbox. Then it uses the same APNS notification to trigger your phone which then wakes Outlook (assuming you have background app refresh turned on) and uses the Outlook REST API to fetch the mail headers to populate your inbox.

So in summary Outlook may not sell your data but bear in mind it does copy your mail data into Microsoft’s servers. I’m ok with that but that’s something you have to determine for yourself.

Of course. The question is do you trust Microsoft to do it who doesnt need to sell your data for cash as its worth near $1 trillion with thousands of revenue streams, or someone like Readdle/Edison who have no other real services or business model.

Im agreeing I would trust MS much more here (not totally, lets not forget some of the WIndows privacy issues, but far far more)

The issue with privacy is interpretations vary. While I may care about say this Edison scandal going on now selling anonymized data to retailers from our emails, do I really care if Microsoft collects Outlook app usage general data- like how many times a day, wat sections used, and usage habits? Not so much really if its to improve the app and not sold off to a 3rd party. That is not as invasive to me. But that is my personal take only.

I love Outlook it just knows me.

I check the Other mail box now and then but there is always just junk in there and on the very rare occasion there is something i want just move it to my focused box and it always goes there in the future.

I have notifications set to focused only so no more messages telling me i have junk!

Is this method of generating Push notifications by Outlook (copying mails to Microsoft servers) , also adapted by apps that use APNS -like whatsapp and Facebook. If not, then how do Facebook and WhatsApp type apps generate push notifications on iOS.

Thanks all. Sadly I use outlook for office 365 for work and I don’t want to mix up my personal email in it.

I mean, I’m sorta kinda ok with using Apple Mail (shame that Apple updates it with new features at a glacial pace) but it’s shocking that there’s barely any innovation going on on in 3rd party email clients that doesn’t involve sucking up your data.
