Are there any major risks to jailbreaking an iPhone?

If I jailbreak my phone is there anyway that the phone can become totally useless (bricked, if i'm not mistaken)?

If I have any problems, I can simply restore he phone back to factory settings?

All I want is extra programs, not to unlock the phone for different carriers or anything.

Slim to none....it's impossible to brick your phone just from jailbreaking.
