i guess the 14" macbook pro is never coming, so i've started thinking about a 2020 13" to replace my 2012 13" air.

seems like all the time there are $100-$200 off the base models at costco, b&h, etc. but since i will probably go 8 years again before upgrading, i want to max the cpu, ram and the storage.

short of apple refurbs, are there ever deals on these CTO type machines? i have not paid close enough attention over the years to know...

thanks for any advice!

Typically, no. The "big box" stores stock the standard models ... heck, even the Apple stores tend to have very little "in stock" in the way of upgraded models ... for anything custom, you have to go CTO, or hope to find a match on the refurb store. Don't be afraid of the Apple refurb store... quality stuff, with discounts and full warranty. I've purchased many products that way, and so far, have never had an issue with anything.

oh absolutely - i buy most of my machines from the apple refurb store; however recently i bit on some costco deals for stock macbook airs for the family. i guess i've been waiting so long to upgrade that i've run out of patience - i'm sure it will take 4-6 months before we see any 2020 MBPs in the refurb store...

recently i got a 2018 MBP for one of my kids on that woot deal, and the only reason i went for it was that it was billed as apple refurbished (but no apple warranty, just a 1 year woot warranty.) it looks like it had been sitting in a warehouse for 2 years because the battery was completely dead. apple hit me for $230 to replace the battery but woot did the right thing and refunded me $200. so it all worked out, but we're flying without a parachute w/o an apple warranty.
