hey all, 2 days ago for christmas i upgraded my mac pro processor to the x5690 6 core chip, applied thermal paste, attached the heatsink, mind u this is my first time doing this, and it was a success. Looking at temps, this is what im seeing. i applied a regular amount of thermal paste to the chip, does it take a while to settle in?

That looks horrible! Typical temps should be at most 40° to 60° - 100° is way too high. Shut the system down before it fries itself!

Oh - you're using colonial temperatures....

the X5690s have a higher TDP than most (if not all) of the included CPUs with Mac Pros, so yes they will run hotter.
as to whether or not that is an excessive temp, im not sure. how much load are you running in these pics?
