I can't stop but wonder why 7.1 has taken so long to jailbreak.
My only conclusion I can think of off the top of my head is they want to save exploits until the public version of iOS 8 is released.

Am I taking crazy pills or is this not too far off?

That's pretty much what they're doing

Gone are the easy jailbreaks with a bootrom exploit

.x jailbreaks are a waste of precious exploits and obviously don't have the majority of audience that would give back by donating, it's mostly people that lost their jailbreak either by accidentally restoring, buying an iphone shipped with unjailbreakable firmware or trying a bad tweak that they couldn't recover from. Sure 7.1 is jailbroken on a couple of people's iphones, it's the closed circle of jailbreak makers and talented exploit researchers. I like this approach, on the long run it's better for the community as a whole, iLEXRAT and Semi-Restore have come a long way and saved thousands of people from losing their jailbreak. The gap that jailbreak devs play in is becoming tighter with every iOS release, it makes perfect sense why they are preserving their findings.

Exactly, they're saving their exploits so don't expect one to come before iOS 8 final. I believe it's smart to wait and see what Apple does with iOS 8 before wasting any exploit. I just don't like the way those hackers always tease us by making videos just to prove they managed to perform a working jailbreak. It only leads to more people shouting for a public release all over the place, imo.

I'm pretty sure quite a few people have a private jailbreak up their sleeves. They just choose not to broadcast it to the world

Why do people act like there's some finite number of exploits?

Because there is. They find what they can in builds and it's usually one or two at most.
The one positive is that there's human error and every patch and "innovation" leaves a possibility for a hole.

I doubt I'm even going to worry about it this time around. With official 3rd party keyboard support and interactive notifications the only legitimate use I have for jailbreak is f.lux

just because there's official support for those doesn't mean that there won't be a use for jailbreak

for example, control centers brought about toggles and everyone thought all toggle related tweaks were dead but with jailbreak, you could customize it

i'd imagine it would be the same here. There'll be a lack of customization with the official version. But we’ll see how things turn out later on, it’s like this every year with people saying so and so of the jailbreak is dead because of this feature baked into iOS

I never claimed there won't be a use for jailbreak.

I wrote the only thing jailbreak will give me is f.lux

I was trying to imply that the jailbreak for iOS 8 might have a use beyond just f.lux for you and that you’ll find out how when new jailbreak tweaks relating to the 3rd party keyboards and interactive notifications come out

i0n1c usually always has a jailbreak but he for the most part just lauds it on twitter then sells it

I wasn't referring to him. I was referring to people nobody has ever heard of (because they don't publicly reveal they have a jailbreak)

i0n1c usually always has a jailbreak but he for the most part just lauds it on twitter then sells it

I don't think that's true, although i0n1c has an unlovable internet personality, a lot of people hate him on Twitter but i think if any of the iOS exploits found by him were sold (to the wrong people) we would have heard about it and seen the damages by now. i0n1c argues with too many people and fact that he never releases his work makes it easy to assume that he sells the exploits but it will always be a speculation.

^I think he does actually release his work, just not in the form of a jailbreak tool. He releases information about some of the vulnerabilities he finds (which are really only useful for people with knowledge about jailbreaking)

For example, supposedly, p0sixspwn uses his exploit
i'll try and find the tweet later today

although i don't know if that's the truth or not but I don't think he's as bad as some people make him seem to be

I honestly do want a 7.1.1 jb, and I have 3 devices jailbroken on 7.0.6.

Evad3rs kinda screwed up IMO, whatever the reason they had for releasing it, having a .0 jailbreak is horrible. If it's going to be one jailbreak per OS version then it needs to be on the stable x.1 releases, not for the buggy x.0 versions earlier on.

Releasing a 7.1 jailbreak and waiting best part of a year for the 8.1 jailbreak now is the only way to get back to the stable x.1 updates. If people really are saving exploits for 8.0 then we are going to be forever stuck on buggy OS.

Hopefully I'm wrong, and an ios 8.0 jb comes out earlier than the 7.0 did last year, meaning we might be able to see a 8.1 jb as well....but I doubt it at this right - by 8.1 people will be saying "wait for ios 9" while we all stick with the bugs of iOS 8.0.

I see what you mean. But an iOS 8 jailbreak release will probably lead to a 7.1.1 release afterwards for those that didn't upgrade. At least that's what I am going to do, upgrade to unjailbreakable 7.1.1 a few days before 8 final, then not upgrade and wait for the 7.1.1 JB to get released. That way you're at least not running a .0 jailbreak anymore.

That's one way to go about it, but I don't think I could do that. Looking back at ios 7, that would mean updating to 7.1.1 in September, losing jailbreak until the ios 8 comes out possibly in December, earlier or later. It could well mean 3months + of no jailbreak or ios 8. Meanwhile always the risk that no one even bothers to release a jb for 7.1.1 - could be that they just untether the iphone 4 tether jailbreak or something.

Too risky for me :)

You're right about that. But I'm pretty sure there is going to be one though. And since most of the exploits still exist in iOS 8 beta, there might be even a chance of a universal JB tool? I mean imagine Evad3rs developing a 7.1-8.0 jailbreak. That would be amazing!

My 7.0.6 JB is extremely stable.
If you have stability problems it's a tweak not the JB.

Also 7.0.6 in itself is fine, 7.1 and 7.1.1 hardly brought any improvements.

With the first beta for 8 they'll start looking at possible entry points with the exploits they still have.
And of this year will be soonest.

I have no 'stability' issues, I have very few tweaks. It's liveable, but it's buggy. Also on the contrary - I think 7.1 brought hardly any new features, the majority of it was stability improvements. Maybe not for mid-range devices, but a lot for older devices and the new 64bit devices.

Web browsers on ipad air/mini 2 is pretty bad, crashes constantly. There also a few small 'bugs' or glitches that crop up now and again - nothing that is worth losing a jailbreak for but it would be good if it wasn't going to be like this for as long as I use a jailbroken idevice just because evad3rs got rushed to release a 7.0 jailbreak :(

If 8.0 jb is out early enough that a 8.1 jb is not out the realm of possibility then fine. But so far I see us being stuck on the .0 cycle for a while - which as I said isn't very ideal when only having 1 jb per iOS version. It's not a crisis - but I'd still prefer .1 jbs obviously, but it's not up to me :p

I thought I remembered him tweeting about selling them during the first evasi0n hacks
