The rumour mill has been very quiet regarding an 11th generation iPad. I don't think we've heard anything for months despite a new mainstream iPad usually introduced around October.

One wonders if we will even get the iPad 11 this year. Last year's surprise when the 10 was introduced revolved around Apple keeping the iPad 9 in production alongside the 10. How much longer will they keep the 9 available?

Whenever it arrives I expect the 11 won't be any different than the 10 in overall form, but it will undoubtedly have modest spec bumps. When it does arrive will Apple continue to offer the 9, something like it being an iPad SE? Or will they finally end the 9 and possibly drop the 11's price a bit?

Thoughts?

The iPad is still listed as new on Apples homepage, so I don't think a new one is arriving in October this year. They also raised the price of the 10 quite a bit, so they likely didn't sell as many as usual, especially considering the 9 is also on the market. Thus, they will keep it for longer.

But given that they now sell FIVE different iPad models, it would be time to overhaul their setup…

Nothing iPad related this year according to Kuo and Gurman. Entry and mini models refresh in 2024.

The 9 is still popular given older buyers’ fondness for the home button and the friendly price point. But when iPhone 15 comes out in a couple of weeks the iPad 9 will be the only device left using Lightning, and I seriously doubt Apple will remake the 9 with a USB-C port just to keep it going.

Apple needs to re-engineer the iPad 10 (which is probably why the iPad 11 is taking so long to be released). I do not expect any new iPads this year.

The only thing we know for certain to be released by the end of this year is iPhone 15 and iOS 17.

And getting iOS 17 then iPadOS 17 could well come as well at the same time or soon after. That could be the only iPad upgrade this year, other than iPad Pro getting M2 earlier this year.

If Apple has a lot of iPad 9 parts on hand it’s possible they keep it going with iPadOS 17 being its only upgrade. Meanwhile it’s not impossible the 11 is quietly released in Oct.-Nov. with a minor spec bump.

That said if Apple does introduce the first M3 Macs around Oct.-Nov. that could be enough fanfare to distract from no new iPads by the end of the year. M3 Macs would be far more exciting than entry level iPads with minor spec bumps.

I bought myself an M1 iPad Air last December so now I’m waiting for the M3 iMac. If it’s what I’m hoping it to be I’m ready to buy.

I passed on a cracking deal for a new iPad 9 today as I’m waiting for 11th gen. Feeling a little stupid now as I realise it might not be coming this year…..

There looks to be lots of decent back-to-school sales going on right now. If you need a new iPad now is a good time to get one. I’ve seen even Air and Pro iPads on sale.

ouch. Yeah, you're in a bit of a spot now. A sunk cost fallacy of sorts. The longer you wait for the 11th gen, the more you need to wait... because 6 months from now the 9th gen will be that much older and that much sooner to the 11th gen.

I've put myself in that position way too many times and have learned that if I'm satisfied with a deal that is happening today, then that is better than a potential deal that may come in the future. Once I figured that out, I haven't had any regrets.

But on a positive note, the 11th gen will most likely not be anything like the 9th gen so if the potential of what the 11th gen offered was enough to prevent you from buying a 9th gen, then you probably wouldn't be satisfied with the 9th gen. You saved yourself from buying something (that was a bargain today) that you would most likely later regret.

Out of curiosity, how cracking was that cracking deal you passed on?

I'm the resident oddball. I love the "classic" iPad form-factor of physical home button and headphone jack. Love it. That is why I held off upgrading my iPad Mini until I knew that the iPad Mini 5 would be the last model with that form-factor. I jumped on the iPad Mini 5. Still have it. Still love it.

That's why, for a "full size" iPad I bought the 9th gen. I knew it was going to be the last with the classic form-factor. Got a great deal on it, snagged the smartcover and smart keyboard cover.

I think iPad 9 is a great entry level product. It’s non-expensive gateway to Apple ecosystem. For me it would be weird if Apple dropped it entirely and just offered iPad 10 as entry. 10 is considerably more expensive than 9. I hope they introduce “new” iPad SE witch would be practically 9 maybe with some minor upgrades like better chip. But what do I know. Apple is king of strategy.

Regarding the rumors… it might be that we don’t have any rumors simply because iPad is not very hot topic.

One of things that I would hope Apple would do is make the iPad Air the entry level iPad like the Air moniker is for the MacBooks. There are too many iPad models. My desire would be if Apple streamlined the line-up. That said an iPad Air with M2 seems like the next logical product release. The only issue with nixing the iPad 9th gen model is that it's a steal in education & it's easier & less expensive to repair the display because it's not laminated. Perhaps Apple needs to keep this type of product in the line-up as the iPad SE?

The problem with the iPad 10th generation vs iPad 9th generation is that the cost of ownership when including peripherals like the keyboards is several hundred dollars more for little real world boost in usefulness. The iPad 10th generation cameras and such are a bit nicer, but I don't think there is anything an iPad 10th gen can do that an iPad 9th gen can't just as fast.

What the iPad 11th generation needs is a price cut and a Smart Keyboard Folio/Cover (in addition to the Magic Keyboard) to make it more competitive

Apple would not discontinue the 9 gen and leave the 10 gen price unchanged.
Either they introduce an 11 gen, and 1) leave the 9 and cut the 10 (already happened in the past) or 2) cut the 9 and reduce the price of the 10 (to 399?)
Or they simply do not introduce a new iPad and leave the status quo, but that's very unlikely.
I think an iPad 11 is coming, as Apple has never missed a release since 2017.
But there will absolutely be an iPad under $400 in the line-up.

Apple couldn’t count the iPad 10 as the entry level iPad I’d say because they know how popular the entry level iPads are for schools. The iPad 10 starts at £499 and that is unsustainable for schools and parents who need to buy such devices for learning. That is likely why the 9th gen is continuing into a third year. If Apple were to become arrogant enough to think they could scrap a £299 to £349 iPad, they’d lose a lot of the business to other manufacturers ultimately.

£250 new sold by Amazon Spain. Best price is usually £300-£315 currently. Better than the £480 for the 10.

Stereo speakers are fairly important to me as is having a device that can last for years. I’d own (and want) an iPad Pro but can’t tolerate the displays. This is why I’m leaning towards waiting on the 11th gen, to future proof myself a little longer and feel at least “I’ve got one of the latest”.

I’ve bought two iPad 9th gens in the last 6 months, both from Curry’s at £299, one of which came with an Apple Pencil as part of the deal. Worth keeping an eye out in case it comes up again.

If we get an iPad 11 right now, the ONLY thing that will change is A15 chip vs A14 (and possibly a binned version).

My guess however is that we don’t get it for another 6-12 months from its 1 year anniversary. And even then, still probably A15. A16 if we’re lucky, but very possibly a binned version.

Apple is the gold standard in operating their supply chain. Apple beats P&G, McDonald's, and Amazon. So the idea they would depend on parts "lying around" to launch a new iPad is a pretty ridiculous.

iPad is due for a price increase. We've seen iPhone SE go from $399 to $429. In all likelihood, Apple simply doesn't want to put in an A15 into an 11th gen iPad until it's necessary in 2024. Keep in mind iPad sells for $419 to the vast majority of customers who are edu eligible.

This, plus gotta feeling that Apple wants to recoup some of the extra R&D expense with the model redesign with the landscape camera before they move on again to another updated base iPad.

My guess is we’ll soon see a new Air with landscape camera but that’s it.
