So I can do the tax tap dance and afford a mid tier Mac Pro 12 Core etc. Definitely not an XDR display. But I want vibrant HDR colors and 4K@120Hz 55” LG OLED heaven. Buuut. None of the Mac Pro options support HDMI 2.1. ? Which is needed going forward with all 4K TVs and monitors that don’t have DP 1.4

Will we ever get a GPU option with HDMI 2.1 ? (Hopefully the W5700XT) whenever that is available.

Is anyone puzzled as to why Apple left out HDMI 2.1 ?

What HDMI features did you want to use? Stuff like Variable Refresh Rate isn’t supported by the OS at all, even if the card has 2.1. I can’t think of much else in 2.1 that would apply to a 4K Display.

One can use a Mac Pro with an LG OLED C9 already now with 60 Hz. HDMI 2.1 is downwards compatible to HDMI 2.0(b).

However, for 4K 120 Hz and/or VRR a graphics card with HDMI 2.1 is required, and there are no HDMI 2.1 cards as of yet. For 4k 120 Hz you will probably need to wait for big navi or next gen Nvidia sometime in mid/late 2020.

You can already buy the cables. ;) https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=31231

Not even kind of. I tend to doubt Apple's too concerned with people trying to use TVs as their displays. HDMI is ubiquitous, but it's also trash. The sooner we get away from it, the better. 🙃
Totally agree here....👍
HDMI is for connecting your tv to your dvd/bluray.
GPU’s have proper connectors.

It is a dealbreaker for buying an ARM Mac Mini for me.

I use a LG CX 48" OLED as my main monitor and would prefer running it at 4K120 Hz. I would be fine if I could get DP 1.4 with DSC to my Club3D DP to HDMI 2.1 adapter but at least with the CableMatters USB-C to DP 1.4 adapter I only get 4K 60 Hz on my work 2019 MBP. I have no idea if Macs even support DSC.

I hope the ”M2" later this year comes with HDMI 2.1.

Yes, I'm upset and it's a reason to hold off.

Technically, they could just use the AMD 6000 series GPUs that do support HDMI 2.1, but I feel like the stuff they're doing with thunderbolt makes it trickier.
