So this is probably a dumb question, but I was wondering something. My wife has an iPad mini 3 that she uses for web browsing, watching movies, and reading books. She shattered the screen of it and was wanting to get it fixed. I think we should just buy a new one but was wondering if there would be a noticeable speed difference for her on the newer iPad mini when particularly doing web browsing. Thanks!

The answer to your thread title is "yes", but there a lot of factors that will impact the perceived speed of browsing on the Mini 3 vs. Mini 5 (for example).

Are you talking Wi-Fi only? How fast is your home internet speed?

I could tell a difference web browsing with my Mini 4 compared to my Mini 5 on the same wifi.

Yes a new one will be faster for a few reasons

- the faster soc means it will load web pages much more quickly

- additional ram means less page reloads

- new ones likely have faster flash, and usually models above the base are faster

- newer models may have updated wifi compatibility, so if you have a compatible router, you may see faster load speeds (I compare router-to-iPhone speeds every generation and they keep improving, I see around 900 Mbps to my router when I'm nearby with wifi sweet spots)

The Mini 3 isn’t supported by iPad OS, so if she likes the look of that, it’s another reason to upgrade.

An iPad usually has about 2 years after it is dropped by Apple before app support starts going. With that in mind, I wouldn’t pay for the screen and would put the money towards a new device.

The Mini 3 has the A7 vs the A12 in the new Mini. Mini 3 vs Mini 4, had the 5 not recently come out, would have been a harder question. It’s a good time to buy a Mini.

Thank you all for the helpful answers. Pulled the trigger on a new Mini for her. Very much appreciate the help!
