How does the new iphone 4s shoot 1080p video and mirroring to the apple tv 2

The video will be downgraded

This doesnt make any sense

They should have updated the apple tv , they updated everything else :(

I dunno im disappointed not mentioned ONCE anything about the apple TV.

Can iOS5 unlock 1080p? People have said it can do it but it's locked. Might this unlock it?? Also the lack of an app store is disappointing for me.

I just want that update to see if maybe this brick of a device will work.

has apple ever announced an update to a product without a big media event?

maybe they will update the apple tv like everybody else does ,without a press conference

The original atv 1 got a huge software update with no fanfare. It enabled 720p playback (a big deal in those days). The hardware always could do it but the original software forbade it. Silent software update and voila ... 720p24 playback as well as the first AC3 Dolby Digital pass through audio in an mp4.

That said ... its possible but doubtful that a software update would allow the atv 2 to be able to output 1080p. Possibly decode 1080p and scale it down to 720p for display on your tv though.

Even xbmc on the atv 2 cannot output 1080p to display ... the paltry 256 mb of ram makes it every hard.

But who knows ... if the next atv2 update is not such a ram pig os wise that would leave more ram available.

After all, the atv 1 running xbmc linux with the same ram outputs 1080p beautifully . So the hdwre could potentially do it.

They updated the iPhone. Save for white iPods, that's it for hardware updates.

The Apple TV is actually one of the exceptions in that it will get a major software upgrade. It had a good mention; it's just not much of anything we didn't expect.

Where are you seeing the ATV is getting a software upgrade? Honestly, that's all it needs IMO.

I mean IOS5. They'll have to update the ATV--perhaps there will be some surprises? Only 8 days away...

The ATV isn't one of the devices getting iOS5, I reckon we'll have to wait until January or March for any Apple TV update, especially as they only just announced the ATV to some European countries this week. A real bummer and no mistake:(

Sigh.

Apple has released several beta versions of iOS 5 for the Apple TV.

The Apple TV will get iOS 5 on or before October 12 just like all the other iOS devices. The iOS 5-based version of the upcoming Apple TV software enables AirPlay mirroring and Photostream, includes new screensavers and provides other minor tweaks and enhancements.

Traditionally, Apple haven't updated Apple TV that regularly. I'm not surprised that it's only a minor update. I wouldn't be surprised if we wait until next year's iPad or iPhone 5 and iOS 6 launch until they release a major update with 1080p and perhaps apps.

But bear in mind that next week's iOS 5 for iPhone/iPad and the software update for the Apple TV will effectively allow apps to run on the Apple TV. With Airplay display of video and audio from iOS apps and mirroring of apps running on iOS devices many new possibilities open up that weren't possible previously.

I'm happy with the updates that will be coming next week, and as for the people moaning about the iPhone 4S being underwhelming, they obviously don't know Apple very well. They often work on the evolutionary not revolutionary principle. When you've got a device as good as the iPhone 4 that has sold incredibly well, then why change that?

They're not going to be able to acheive 1080p on the ATV2 in software. THAT little trick will require the A5, like it did on the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S.

There's no reason to assume Apple will exclude the ATV2 from future iOS upgrades.

irishman have you seen this movie

Again with the AirPlay mirroring, why is this a good thing, why do i need the same thing playing on both devices. Just make airplay work (send both audio and video) across all Apps.

Then you can use the smaller device (iPhone, iPad or iPod) to surf the web or whatever.

I imagine AirPlay mirroring is primarily for gaming and presentations.

Back to the topic, I'm not disappointed yet. I don't think they could have announced an Apple TV event even if there was an update coming up. It was too jam packed and the iPhone is their flagship product line.

However, I do hold out hope that an A5-based Apple TV is coming soon. We have to keep in mind that even the iPod touch didn't get an update to the A5. It makes you wonder if they're having supply constraints with those parts.

Of all the people, I think this guy knew what he was talking about:

Hopefully, 2012 will be more exciting for the Apple TV.

Yeah, with something like Real Racing HD 2, you get to see a layout of the track on your iPad and the TV shows you the actual race.

Which is pretty cool.

Was waiting to see if they update it before I bought a second one for our bedroom. Now that they haven't, i've ordered a refurbished ATV2 for $85 from apple. Can't wait forever to "cut the cord".

When they eventually update the atv2, I'll give one of my old ones to my mom.

Your comment makes me think about when Apple released AEBS 5th generation and not even the Apple employees knew that what they had in stock differed from what they had the week before :)

Im looking at the full keynote now on the apple tv iTunes podcast

They mentioned what the ios 5 does for for the ipad/ipod/ipod nano and iPhone but nothing for the current apple tv 2
