I was calling customer support with my iPhone X and I wanted to turn off the screen to save battery while on hold with speaker phone on. However, my calls kept on getting cut off for apparently no reason. Get this... pressing the side button will hang up on the call! On iPhone 7 Plus and all the other iphones it would lock the phone while keeping the call active. This better be a huge bug.

Which side button are you talking about. there are the two volume buttons on one side, and a single button on the other. This is the power button and it turns the phone off, so I would imagine that it would hang up on the call since the phone is being shut off.

If you are on speakerphone or use headphones or Bluetooth speaker or something like that then it's supposed to just turn the screen on or off.

Is this like that for you all the time? Have you tried restarting the phone? What iOS version are you running?

Pressing the button means lock the phone, not turn the phone off so hanging up a call is counterintuitive. Apparently, if you go back to home screen then pressing the Siri button will lock the screen and keep the phone cal going.

Same behavior as always.

The side button is not supposed to hang up the call if it’s using the speakerphone.

I just tried mine, and it only turned off the screen, like it is supposed to do.

If you speak to the phone with the phone on your ears and you are on the phone interface, pressing the power button always end the call. Only if you are on speakers or headphone it will not BUT you can by pass this if you talk with the phone on your ears by returning to the springboard by pressing the home button (or the shortcut command on the X?) and then pressing the power button will just turn off the screen.

I can also confirm that pressing the side "lock" button on an iPhone X when on speaker phone or headphones does NOT hang up the call.

Not a huge bug and we are not kidding you at all.

Works as it always has. Try another call and see if it still happens, if it does, reboot your phone and all will be good in the world again.

My bet is you weren’t really on speaker.

iPhone X is pretty loud if you are coming from an older iPhone, and you can hear the earpiece even if you hold the phone away from your ear at full volume.

Enjoy your marketing inspired product

Only thing that you can try is to add “another” finger in the settings and use your thumb to train my angles of the same finger that you normally use. If that doesn’t work then it could be a defective sensor.

I was unable to replicate your problem on my iPhone X running iOS 11.2.

I made a call holding the phone away from my head so the screen was on; I pressed the side button during the call and it turned off the screen but did not end the call or affect the call in any way.

I made another call holding the phone next to my ear, so the screen would have been off. I pressed the side button during the call and, again, it did not end the call or affect it in any way.

LOL... I don’t use speaker or headphones and wasn’t clear enough on original statement.

Keep forgetting I still have that lol
That's kind of the point, that it doesn't hang up the call when speakerphone or headphones (or Bluetooth) are used.

I tested it again and it didn’t hang up while on a speaker call. Guess it was a bug.

TIL side button can hang up calls not with headphones or speaker on.

That’s pretty chill honestly
