Please for this price can't you just give me at least a ATI HD 5850? I'm talking about the high-end 27"... Pleeaase? For 2000 bucks, thats not to much to ask!

I know I pay for a premium product. And i accept that. I really like the product as a whole and the design, and OSX, and compatibility and stuff.. But a 5850 is the least I would expect in the $2000 27" iMac. I was really hoping.. Then I could really buy a iMac as an replacement. Now with Steam and what not. I am a little dissapointed actually... I know people will say, apple blablabla, xx% difference blablabla and no difference blablabla. And to those I say, it makes a difference! Especially on such a brilliant 27" IPS screen with that resolution. nuff said.

And I just wanted to say, $750 for getting the 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD? That, is quite expensive! I really like the feature! But hey, thats way to much to pay for even a SSD...
 
The 5750 is likely desktop version which is faster than mobility 5850... Desktop 5850 is simply too hot

As it would seem the temperature doesn't seem to be any different between the two.

I rather think it's business as usual as they never go for somewhat higher end. I think if they really wanted to make the most of this Steam and blablabla and being gamer-friendly too, they would've chosen at least an option for 5850. Temp and size arguments is bull.

Sorry about the SSD flack though.. I realized its quite some difference in price hopping up to 256GB
 
The 5750 advertised for the new iMac is probably either an underclocked desktop 5750 or 5850, so either way you'er getting a jumiper chip-- which is what you at least wanted, so there's really no "are you kidding me?" going on.

Yes, that would be nice. It isn't possible though to make every single person happy. People asked for an SSD option and we got one. I read a post earlier from some guy that said he isn't buying because there isn't a six core option. Really? It was just last year that we were all praying for a quad configuration. We got it. People then complained it wasn't available in the base model. I'm glad I'm not an Apple engineer.

First, you can't compare an OC version. Secondly, those have been tested in full size tower with a lot more airflow and dedicated cooling. iMac has limited airflow and no dedicated fan for the GPU. 5850 has TDP of 151W and 5750 has TDP of 86W, meaning that 5850 is about 76% hotter

erhm, why would you assume I was expecting a mobile-card? I'm not getting a 5850 is not still me getting a 5850 desktop, which was what I wanted.

Why are people defending this? Can't you just realize it would be fair?
 
frack this. Can't stand this. Just wanted to vent my missplease with not getting a somewhat contemporary graphics processor when Mac finally getting some games, maybe. And some people should agree that Apple could make it work, if they wanted to. I believe there is a reason they're makin $3 billion last Q. Yeah sure, they make great products. I wont argue against that. What annoys me is that it's always that little thing they leave out, that would make it perfect. It's always almoooost there.

Yeah, and?? It is a whole whopping $75 cheeper. It retails for the same price as the iMac's SSD. My point originally was there really isn't a need to complain about the cost because they are similar in cost to what is currently being offered elsewhere. If something doesn't work for you, move along. SSD's are not cheep. How much did you think they were going to be???? If a $75 cost difference is the deciding factor in whether or not you will buy an iMac, then maybe an emachine will work better for you.

Apple just doesn't care about gamers, never have. It's sad but what can you do about it? They care more about the design, coolness and greenness of the iMac than the actual performance. If you called Apple, they would tell you to get the Mac Pro with 5870, simple as that

SSD prices are not cheap OWC 256GB $620. How much is a 1TB drive? Can't we just be impressed that the big ol' Apple is slowly rolling in our direction! Like someone said they will never please us all.

Yeah this is unfortunately true. I didn't really care either until recently when I realized my 360 isn't any fun anymore.. I want to be able to Simrace.. And I figured now when there seems to become more gamer-friendly on macs since steam and so on is starting to take off, they would maybe embrace that.. But no.. Oh well.. Maybe I'll get a Macbook or MBP and a gaming PC.. lol that would probably cost the same as getting the high end 27" iMac anyway... Except, i wont get such a good screen included...

The gamer-friendly audience is a niche market. The iMac is an All-in-one system which, by its very nature, does not cater to gamers. Apple is smart, and has tried to offer a mid-range card that offers performance on par with the needs of the majority of its user base.

Because the iMac has always used mobile gpus. Desktop gpus are simply either too hot or too big for an all-in-one design. The most you could ask for would be either crossfire'd multiple mobile gpus or an underclocked desktop gpu like some of us think the 5750 is. It's not as much as trying to defend the iMac as we're "hardcore apple fanboys," it's more of "you have to look at the realistic limitations of an all-in-one design."

If apple actually puts a desktop 5750 and 95 watt lynnfield in the current 27 inch like we think they're doing, it's actually quite a great bit of engineering.
 
Oh well, I've been proven wrong. I accept my defeat. I just wanted more.. as always. And as the consumer should.
 
Just got off the phone with an Apple rep to return my i7 refurb for the new model and he said that the GPU is a desktop version based on the information he was looking at...

Dunno if he's right, but thats coming straight from their customer service ppl...
 
iFixit's usually quick to get new models, I hope they post a teardown soon! I'd wanna see how apple would fit the (possible desktop) gpu in there.

Apple employees also said 4850 was desktop, but I guess I'll give them the benefit of the doubt as mobile 4850 is exact same as desktop 4850 spare 125 extra mhz clock.

As if the people there would know it :rolleyes: No, we will only know for sure when someone actually gets his iMac and runs some info utils on it.

Overall I have to agree with the thread starter though. I did order a high-end i7 today, but I am a bit pissed at Apple for charging 200+ € more for the new models although the hardware in them actually cost the same or less then in the 2009 model. As if they don't earn enough money with the iPhone... Still, I believe that the i7-870 will be enough for my needs for years to come...
