Are you thinking about putting a 7200RPM drive in your MB?

I have been seeing some posts on discussion.apple.com about putting a 7200RPM drive in the Macbook. I am pondering it. My current plan, if i decide to buy it, is to buy the base 2.0ghz model and do the following:

Add 2GB matched pair of DDR667
Add 7200RPM 100GB+ HD
Buy Apple care toward the end of the complimetary period

I think I would be more than happy with this! I just have to see how the issues (heat, whine, moo, etc) pan out over the next few weeks.

That sounds like a good plan. Here's a couple things to think about...

Don't buy cheap RAM, it'll most likely give you problems. Go to a place like http://www.datamem.com or crucial and stay away from anything with the word "value" in the name.

The HDD will be good, I'd wait until the 160GB 7200 drives come out and drop in price some. Maybe even waiting for 200GB would be worth it, I would imagine they'd be available before the year is out.

As for AppleCare, your phone support runs our after 90 days, and I think its worth having that as an option. I'd buy it sometime within 90 days of purchase. Unless you're just strapped for the money, theres really no reason to wait. If you're gonna get AppleCare, go ahead and buy it with the machine. Its lasts 3 years from date of purchase either way.

I have never used phone support on my previous apple products. I think i will be fine. Thanks for the suggestions.

The first upgrade will be memory. I know about the value stuff. I am a PC switcher and I come from the land of building computers and spending all your time troubleshooting them..

The hard drive will come later, I have a 320GB external and that will make the 60GB on the Macbook bearable.

The only thing people are really worried about is heat from the 7200RPM. Which ties in with the current heat issues.

I have no problem reapplying some quality thermal compound. That however leaves the issue of warranty. I somehow doubt if i call apple and say it gets too hot because of too much thermal paste, they will say "ok, send it in and we will fix that right up"
