Arial font problem

Dear all,

I've got a strange problem with my Arial font. I have a Word file containing text in Arial, and it opens and displays fine in Word. However, when I open that file in Pages, Pages tells me that Arial is not available and that it substituted with ArialMT. The result is that the text looks strange, to say the least (see attached screenshot).

What can I do? FontBook reports Arial as available and activated... I appreciate any suggestions!

First, try removing and re-installing Arial.

Or, you could use the font Helvetica instead. It's extremely similar, with slight differences that in most professional's eyes makes it better.

I know. If I write something, I never use Arial.

The problem is that if I get a file, I'd like to see it how it was in the first place. Pages does not offer me a choice to manually select the font it should substitute for the "missing" Arial - the field in the error window is greyed out. Or am I missing something?

How can I remove and re-install it? Simply drag it out of Library/Fonts and back in (btw, that's the only place where I have Arial, ~/Library/Fonts is empty)? Do I have to restart inbetween?

That's not always an option. There are many universities where Helvetica is not considered an acceptable font, for example.

A temporary fix would be to select all the text (command + a) and then change the font to Arial. That should display close to it's intended way. It's probably caused by a difference in the way Microsoft refers to fonts versus the way Pages does.

Well, if I change the text to Arial in Pages, it looks the same way (funny, that is). Arial italics and bold work. Arial Regular works in TextEdit, though, and everything look ok in FontBook - meaning, it looks like I think it should look.

That's strange, isn't it? Can I reinstall Arial from Snow Leopard's installation disk? Or from my Time Machine backup - though I am not sure how long i've had this issue...
