i finally took the plunge and pulled out all stops. ive been surviving on a powerbook g4 since 2003 and decided to buy a brand new aluminum iMac for home - dual processor, 3.06Ghz, 4gb ram, 1TB HD, iMac for home, custom configured, costing me my hard earned $2816.00.

i was so excited and i get it out of the box and the stand/arm that tilts your screen up and down is SO LOOSE. i cant even type without the screen noticeably shaking!! i have a 24 inch aluminum iMac at work, so i know that the arm is supposed to be tightly torqued -- i use it every day for design.

WHAT DO I DO? I'm afraid apple won't fix it if i send it back. if i bring it to the genius bar can they take the back panel off and tighten it up somehow?? i mean i just got it FedEx today -- my dream computer ive been saving for, for over 2 years...

i havent even booted the computer on -- my wife is all interested learning about macs, so she put the monitor/computer on the desk and took out the keyboard and was pretending to type and she was like "why is the screen so loose, yours at work doesnt shake like this?"

any ideas??
this has been the major buzzkill of the day/year for me. i have a pit in my stomach. any help/advise would be GREATLY appreciated as to fix this problem.

I am sorry to hear this, never heard this before but I think the easiest way is to just take it to the nearest apple store and they will definitely fix for you it or send it back and get you a new one ( I am sure because it is brand new with 1 year guarantee and it is even within the 14 day decision period).
I hope I helped you out here, good luck!

3rd return with apple

I returned two shuffles back to apple. One through the store and one through online. Talking about easy, no questions asked. Then I returned my 24inch brandnew same configuration as you to apple. You have to send it back, stores dont sell them. So dont bother.

I got a free shuffle, per my request, .mac for a year, and spoke to all people in the us, they might have been canadians. Who knows, bottom line excellent service through and through.

Call within the first 14 days. I know how you feel bottom line they will treat you right.

Thanks,
jeffrey:D

hey its funny, i just called them, explained it, they made an exception and are shipping me out a new custom configuration as soon as my pre-paid RMA labels hit the FedEx scanners :) i was just worried cause i had problems in the past, we have a LOT of mac stuff in my office and this was my first real BIG purchase personally.

**** what is worth noting is the apple customer service rep's manager said the new Penryn iMacs, have had a lot of returns, cause like mine, the spring that holds the torque was subcontracted to a new company in Mesa, Arizona and his manager said that anywhere up to 60% of the new Penryn iMacs will have very loose springs/screens drooping due to this problem...

so if you buy/get a new Penryn iMac, I guess you can check its serial number with Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and see if you have a torque problem with the screen falling down. they've just realized that this is occuring this week and are doing their best to accomodate and ship ones that were only made in California.

so if youre screen droops, its probably from Mesa he said and they would take it back or issue a recall soon --weird, i guess i was a guineau pig****

i don't have the loose stand issue - my iMac was manufactured in china (M8810)

don't forget about ALLL the returns of aluminum iMacs (even the new ones) based on screen bleeding and gradient color casts... i'm on my 2nd Penryn iMac... it still has issues (although not as bad as the first) but it shouldn't have any screen issues for a brand new $2000+ computer... none at all! i'm contacting my service rep tomorrow to see when they can do about it... *fingers crossed*
