I did a lot of reading into this and couldn't find an answer. So I am hoping maybe someone with more knowledge has at least an explanation. Anyway..

I bought a 75hz monitor to go with my new mac mini. I read that the mac mini has HDMI 2.0 and I assumed that would probably even support 144hz, but I don't need that. It only gets a max of 60hz at 1080p. I can get 75hz only if I make the aspect ratio 4:3.

Is there a good reason it only works with 60hz?

I tried switchresX as well. It has the same res as the mac display preferences only. Thanks in advance.

I found this post while trying to find an answer to my (very similar) issue. I also have a M1 Mac mini and an LG QHD UltraWide monitor. It’s supposed to support 75hz at 3440x1440, but I can’t get it to go above 60hz. I tried using an HDMI cable originally, and then thought maybe a DisplayPort to USB-C cable might work. Unfortunately, macOS still won’t let me set it above 60hz.

Thanks for the reply im shocked displayport didnt work. Might be an m1 limitation? Im annoyed because I specifically bought a 75hz monitor for eyestrain.

I’m hoping it might be connected to the issues with ultrawide resolutions that Apple has acknowledged will be fixed in a future update.

I do have the same problem both running an 70 hz monitor over HDMI with an intel MBP and Mac mini m1. But it works over DisplayPort - so at least worth a try.
