Son of a beached whale!! I got my MBP back today from Apple store who shipped it out to depot. Got home and proceeded to remove the hard drive and reinstall my 160GB upgrade that I had. The 2 bit hacks from Apple over torqued one of the 2 hex bits that are under the memory cover. The damn screw won't come out now.
Now I have to figure out what the heck to do. It’s not like I can go into the Apple store and say "Hey. I was trying to void my warrantee by upgrading the hard drive in my MBP but the blasted screw won’t come out. Can you replace it?”

Honestly I think I’m done with Apple. This will now be the 6th time I’ve taken in my laptop not including the two times I had to take my battery in because the first bloated and the second just stopped. I’ve now been without the data on my laptop for over a week and a couple days now. Apple has successfully killed my productivity.

Love the thread title.
6 times eh? For the same machine? Was it three or more times for the same issue?

If so, there may be light at the end of the tunnel...

Sorry to hear that. But don't victimize yourself. You killed your productivity by relying on a single machine for all your work.

Sadly, I hear ya. I love my Macs, but Apple has the worst customer service and repair service I've ever dealt with. But in this situation, couldn't you still just move the data to another computer before taking it in? I mean, it's a screw we're talking about, you could wait and do some work, maybe?

So you are telling me I should hav purchased a backup MBP? The simple fact of the matter is I had next day business repair when I had my thinkpad. Apple has no such thing. And apparently its also my fault that they couldn't fix the problem the first two times and its also my fault that someone didn't know there job at Apple's depot location. Yes. What a fool I was. Nex time I I should buy three laptops and scatter them around town just in case.

Yeap. Before you can be like STEVE you gotta spend like STEVE. One thing to talk the talk, another to walk the walk!

Actually, Apple has something called ProCare which offers priority repairs. Of course, it's another $99, but what can you do.

no matter how many problems i dont think i could leave Apple.

I hate Windows too much, i'd be tempted with Linux but i like photoshop and dreamweaver too much!!

if OSX was on every computer i would go straight to Sony for a nice C2D Vaio with Blu-Ray!

Obviously you're not a golfer.
but having a cheap backup machine for getting critical work done is not a bad idea at all.

thats why i am looking at getting a used/refurb mac mini. its worth a couple of hundred $ to be able to keep working while a machine gets repaired. i am still on the fence about ProCare however.

Urge to kill fading. . fading. . raising!. . fading. . gone

*blinks* That was unexpected. I was expecting to go into the Apple store ready for a fight having them tell me that the torqued screw wasn't their fault and it was the person I took the system to, to install the hard drive's fault.
Walked into the store, as for the manager, calmly explained the crap that I've had to go through on this system. He took it in back, worked on it for about 20 minutes, came back telling me they would order an identical MBP. *shrugs* Like for like. Its only fair. Waited another 10 to talk to a Genuis. And they started ordering the system. At one point they asked me if I wanted glossy or matte. *blinks* Umm I didn't have that option before. I come to find out that the no longre have the first gen MBP's. They are configuring a new system for me. Score. I give him my specs on my current machine. Wait about 15 minutes as he documents all the crap that they and I have gone through on this system. I then get a printout of the workorder with the system desc. Look it over and point out to him that he gave me a 160GB drive and I only had a 100GB drive in my current system. Free upgrade he tells me. *blinks* Double score.
So while this has been a pretty big PITA for me not only am I getting a faster machine; I now have a DL burner, FW800 now (Which is going to rock for the seagate 160GB drive that I have) and a glossy screen. (Spent about 10 minutes sitting there mulling it over. I hope I made the right choice.)
All in all my faith has been restored. I just hope I have fewer problems with this system *knock on wood*

PS-They are giving me the 2.33Ghz system not the 2.16Ghz. Which really was over the top since I did have a 2Ghz chip in there originally.

well, you still loosing productivity, what don't you whine about it

I think you mean why, and what I ended up doing is ordering and overnighting a drive cage for my current 160GB hard drive. They let me keep the current MBP which I didn't expect going in. I'm going to have to boot off of firewire and use that for the time being. It sucks because its another $100 out of pocket but its still a work around. The bottem line is while this has been a PITA at least Apple didn't shrug and say sorry here's a referb or something.

My original bitchfest was because I was expecting to be without the system for another 3-5 days. Which would have left me without any options. At least now I'll have something.

Let me get this straight, you complained about a screw and got a whole new system?

I guess when you look at it that way. The thing is they could not remove the screw and as such could not put the hard drive back into the system. The only way to remove it was to send it back in for repairs, again. I'm guessing that is what took the manager so long: he was going over the LONG history of this system. All told Apple has had this system in for repairs for about 3.5 weeks.

But yah. When it comes right down to it what pushed things over the edge was a screw.

ALSO I WANT TO NOTE THAT AT NO TIME DID I DEMAND A NEW SYSTEM.
I talk tough online but I understand that these guys are just doing there job. Going in there and throwing a temper tantrum at someone who isn't at fault makes me feel like an *** because I've been in that situation myself. No when the manager came back up front with my system HE said they would replace it. I didn't say a word.
