I have nothing to say but great things about my apple TV. We have to understand that Media Streamers etc. are for "geeks". People shy away from technology that isn't plug and play. The vast majority is still returning Plasma/LCD tvs due to the bad PQ but not realizing that they don't have a HD feed in order to receive the PQ.
I love my apple tv and would not trade it for the world. Also for all my friends that come over to enjoy all the movies, photos, and music at a click of the remote don't care about the mpeg4 x264 quality or the non-discrete 5.1 DTS/DPL.
I say enjoy the unit and don't read into all the negativity.

I love mine, too, but I WOULD trade it for the world. Or even a nice Porsche. Or even something much cheaper, like a house, for instance...
I reevaluate keeping my

Give it until macworld 08. I have a feeling it is getting a major update. Jobs himself said one was coming, and we are still waiting.
So, people who just click a remote and get a choice of hundreds of real-time channels, many in HD, just don't understand waiting around for downloads so they can watch and listen to endless poor quality video and audio of whatever group they have a crush on? And there is no wire! Dude, you can like smoke and stuff while you wait and by the time the download is complete you are sooo mellow and the group never looked or sounded better. Wow, man, enjoy.
Ok, that is harsh. The download for money concept will indeed compete with free tv when the download times, quality, etc. catch up. Then we can all retreat into our own little walled-off worlds and see and hear only what we want, when we want. No need for any idea of what is going on around you. Be completely clueless. Create your own reality! No need to understand what is difficult or unpleasant. Cool, huh!?
Job's vision isn't wrong, but it may have unintended consequences.
If Apple allows rentals of movies on iTunes, Apple TV will be a much more attractive proposition. My guess is that it will cost $5 to rent a movie.
This one is a mystery to me.
I agree with Jobs that it doesn't need a DVD. It is a replacement for a DVD, and frankly I have no love for optical media.

I use mine all the time. Great product. Easy to use. Works well. Plenty of H.264 content around. So why doesn't it sell well?

AppleTV is kind of a "chicken or the egg" product right now. Needs more and higher-quality content, perhaps a couple of more features and/or a slightly lower price point.
For now, it's an important stake in the ground for Apple to claim its spot in the digital living room of the near future. For the present, it's an important bargaining chip for Apple to hold with the TV and movie studios when negotiating rights to sell (or rent?) video content through iTunes.

I love my hacked ATV. Not sure if I'd have a use for an unhacked one. I'd never convert my collection to MP4. too time consuming.
I think there will be an update to the ATV Software in the near future

elgato would be able to solve this problem on their own for the current version of ATV but it seems that they are waiting for the release of the 2.0 Version of the ATV OS X

I love mine - it's cool looking at all the YouTube stuff on a regular TV instead of a small computer screen on a desk.
I think Apple is trying out downloading content directly to a device (iTunes WiFi Store). If that works well, then I see being able to download iTunes stuff directly onto theTV. Even sync directly with your iPod/iPhone.

Honestly, right now I think Apple sees the Apple TV as a dead end, barring a major distribution announcement.
Moving forward with the Apple TV as it is means they have already ceded the world market to a competitor. Looking at the iPod and iPhone efforts through Europe, we can be pretty sure they don't want to do that.
I honestly think Steve was caught off guard here -- he really expected to negotiate content distribution deals elsewhere in the world relatively quickly.
The lack of updates is due to a complete rethinking of the strategy -- they're not changing anything until they can figure out a model that can work outside the US.
Moving forward with the Apple TV as it is means they have already ceded the world market to a competitor. Looking at the iPod and iPhone efforts through Europe, we can be pretty sure they don't want to do that.

The lack of real content is killing the AppleTV, and Apple cant do much to help - the studios are slowly withdrawing from purchase/ownership to rent/subscription models.
This may be in the works at Apple based on hidden tidbits in iTunes, but until you get something to watch on an AppleTV (other than last-seasons TV shows) there is no reason to push people to buy them.
