Article cites 100% increase in performance from Leopard in Intel Macs

In a rather biased article at mac os rumors http://www.macosrumors.com/20060710A1.php , theyve cited leopard to bring humongous performance improvements on itel equipped machines of up to 100%. According to them, leopard will redefine the term instantaneous for launching applications. Older PPC macs will see improvements of up to 25% in overall system speed.

If this rumor has any grounding, this cat is already roaring!

what do you think? Fanatical wishful thinking or possibly true?
 
MacOS Rumors is probably the most unreliable Mac Rumor site known to man...

...although it is quite fun to read

(they're arguing that the Mac Pro will come in 8-processor configurations, some kind of Mac Gamer, MacBook Lite, and MacBook Gamer systems are coming soon, etc....)

Doesn't a 100% increase mean everything is instantaneous?

Photoshop filter - Done instantly.
Folding @ Home - Done instantly.
Doom 3 - Double click the game and you get an instant "Game Over", thus infinite frames per second.
Seti @ Home (for nostalgia) - Done instantly (p.s. ET says "hi").

Well.. I guess that'll make for an entertaining keynote in a couple of weeks time.. :rolleyes:

His obligatory video iChat with Big Phil could be fun too, instead of the obligatory delay (oooh, it is going to connect, or will Stevie have demo egg on his face), it connects "super instantly"* to Phil catching him unawares with his finger on a booger hunt.

(* According to Apple benchmarks, 50% more instantly than any other OS).

No, a 100% increase in speed means speed has doubled from 100% (before) to 200% (after).

What you're saying is a 100% decrease in execution time. In that case, time goes from 100% (before) to 0% (after).

Either case is ridiculous, but at least MOSR was good for a chuckle today. :rolleyes:

Yes, I knew, but couldn't resist having a go. ;)

Actually there were some interesting points in the article, especially about Dashboard.

When Dashboard was introduced, many of us complained that it was two features rolled into one, which would be better kept apart:

- A 'desktop accessory' window layer, which can be summoned or dismissed with a button press or mouse gesture.
- A simple, lightweight plugin format (Widget), which dramatically lowers the bar for developers wishing to make basic utilities.

Unfortunately, you can't add any window to the Dashboard layer, only Widgets. And, you can't (easily) have persistent Widgets on the desktop, only in Dashboard.

By the sound of things, both these issues may be fixed in Leopard, as well as some system utilities such as System Preferences being moved into Dashboard.

Wow:D That would be cool. Showing off to all your pc loving friends that your mac can run Doom 3 at infinite frames per second:cool:

Unfortunately, I'm told after 60fps or so, you just can't tell the difference, so the other 'infinity - 60' frames per second are just wasted..
 
No, this is true, really. My friend knows the son of the guy who walks Steve Jobs' dog, and he told me that Leopard will allow a core solo mini to render the next pixar film in an hour and a half. And that's with the base RAM.

This rumor is garbage, clearly, but I wonder to what extent the OS processes are optimized to take advantage of multiple cores? I guess in a modern OS like OS X, even OS process are already being effectively divided up amongst cores, correct? But I wonder how efficiently?
 
The article is very carefully worded. It says "up to 100%", meaning that some operation(s) happens at almost double speed.

Maybe graphics primitives draw at twice the speed, or process forking, or virtual memory access. But it could be anything, and it doesn't by any stretch of the imagination mean that everything will run at twice the speed, all the time.

Even a simple thing, like displaying a Finder window, might involve a hundred different method calls. Each one is a target for improvement, and some can probably be boosted 100%. All that means is that an operation takes .00001sec instead of .00002sec.

It's not uncommon at all for some minor subroutine to improve by 100%, or even 500% in the early optimization phases. That doesn't mean that everything doubles or quintuples in speed, just one small part of a very big, complex whole. OSX/Intel is still fairly new and unoptimized; I'd be shocked if Apple wasn't seeing big increases.

It's not necessarily 60fps. It's the frame rate of the monitor. After you reach the max of the monitor you could actually see poorer performance.

Also, it can vary the speed of the processor just so to compose quantum electromagnetic pulses which would summon alien civilisations to help us find Osama and kill him!

Then when the aliens try to turn on us, the Mac Mini will change the EM emissions accordingly and microwave their giant brains!
