Artistic, Brush Strokes, Stylize, Distort, Sketch, Stylize Effects not working

In Illustrator CS2 I cannot get

Artistic, Brush Strokes, Stylize, Distort, Sketch, Stylize Effects

to work. They list in translucent text, so you cannot select them.
It's obviously a fairly simple problem but don't know what. Can anyone enlighten me?

The fact of the matter is that some effects can be applied only to raster objects.
In addition, some effects work in RGB mode only.

I've tried to 'rasterize' the object but no joy! I have also tried in Photoshop, no luck. I have tried converting to 16 bit colour also, and converting to RGB. Still no luck.
