I want to use a new Mac Mini as a controller for a Pegasus RAID. That's it. It's only job. It will then share that connection with multiple Macs in my office. (Right now my iMac serves that function and it's annoying to others when I have to reset my machine and they lose the RAID.)

Here's my question: Does anything need to be upgraded from the baseline?

My inclination is, yeah, I should bump up to an i5 and 16 GB of RAM. I'm used to bumping things up. Is that reasonable or am I just throwing money away? Or is it SO reasonable that I should go all the way to 32 GB?? We do video work so we're quite frequently copying 100 GB folders or simply streaming large clips over the network to edit from a laptop.

File transfer speeds is one area where my computer knowledge falls a bit short. I'm not sure which parts get in on the action.

probably worth it if you go with 10gb ethernet and get a new switch to go with it

put the mini on a 10gb switch port, with 1 1 1 1 1 for all the users, more can get max speed at a time
