[ask] MBA, How to Create Bootcamp partition for WinXP less than 20GB

Dear All,

i just bought MBA 11" (snow leopard) with SSD 64GB. i need to install windows XP as well only for some application that really need WinXP.

but when i want to create partition for WinXP with "Bootcamp Assistant", this tools only allow me to create with minimum 20GB partition size for winxp allocation.

is anyone can help me, how to create partition with bootcamp or other tools so i able to have partition for winxp only 10GB or less...

A word of caution, Apple doesn't provide drivers for the macbook air in Windows XP - they only provide a set for Windows 7. Here is the link to the macrumors guide on installing XP in bootcamp on the macbook air: Guide

I don't know about the 20 GB minimum issue, as I haven't tried it and can't experiment with it unless I were to undo my own partition, so I'm clueless for that part.

Given the hassle involved, You may want to consider running XP in a virtual machine instead. I am running it right now in Parallels ($$) with 1GB of RAM allocated and it works well for the light tasking I need. VMWare Fusion ($$) and VirtualBox (free!) are other options.

I recommend using VMWare... make it a virtual disk. 20GBs on a partition would make it too slow. And after the install, only a little bit would be available anyway.

You can use Disk Utility to create a smaller partition, just make sure to make it FAT32 and then use the Windows installer to reformat that partition as usual.

I'd second the recommendation to just use virtualization if you can, though, for the same reasons. Many things on the new MBA's don't work in Windows XP out of the box, like Wifi (or the Apple USB Ethernet dongle), bluetooth, etc.

I have a 1st gen MBA. I have had Fusion with XP for 3 years. Works good, but I want to do bootcamp now.

I have learned that I have to wipe clean my HD (128 ssd) and repartition it and ... goodlord... reinstall everything.... according to the Genius Bar, because my drive will not partition at the moment..

HOWEVER-- after reading this thread... Is my MBA not capable of fully supported Bootcamp/drivers and all that?

I am going to buy a new MBP, but want this on the MBA too! Drat!

I dont know if an option exits for fusion but there is a physical to virtual converter for esxi i think they both use the same files not sure.

I am referring to the above posts that say Apple does not provide/support drivers for the MBA to run Windows XP--- in Bootcamp--

Is this true? Ouch.

If it is true, then if I get Windows 7 (or whatever is the new windows) will that be the best/supported way?

Is XP that old now? --- that is not supported?

finally, i managed to install winxp sp2 on my mba.

this is what i did:
1. create winxp iso and copy to usb flashdisk
2. install vmware fusion
3. run vmware fusion and
4. chose menu virtual machine --> cd/dvd --> choose disk image (go to usb flask disk, click iso winxp)
5. chose menu virtual machine --> cd/dvd --> cd/dvd setting --> click connected.
6. restart guess or just enter vmware startup blackscreen
7. winxp partition, for my case winxp says that i have ~40GB unpartition, create partition with 6000MB only, winxp installer bluescreen says that i have C:/ with 6GB and rest is unpartition.
8. Go with winxp installation
9. done winxp, dont forget to install vmware-tools as well, otherwise your winxp screen will not able to get full screen.

Result: Works good for me, all winxp functionality works properly... NO yellow (?) mark on device manager, network detected as LAN firewalled... internet works normal... assigned 1CPU with 512MB RAM. running snow leopard and winxp ...so far so good...

i wanted to have winxp with bootcamp, dual boot so i can choose on mba startup...and with small partition

but, when i run bootcamp assistant...mba allows me with minimum 20GB for partition... thats why i raised this thread.

after that, i give up to create small partition for bootcamp... i followed to have 20GB, but...bootcamp doesn't allow me to install WinXP... ask for Win7 installer.... i'm sure that my usb winxp installer works fine (i try with non mba laptop)...and i realized that MBA does not support winxp (?)

i went with ghostlyorb & Voondebah suggestion to use virtual machine. so the step that i gave is to have winxp running on MBA...but virtually.
