Ever since roughly 9.1 I've had my iPhone ask for my Apple ID password for no reason every now and then. Either after I unlock or sometimes even showing a notification on the lock screen.

It's maybe once a week (sometimes two weeks) on my phone but I have a family member with the same issue but way more frequent (2-3 times weekly and sometimes even multiple times a day.) my phone is a 6 and theirs is a 6s.

Entering the password makes it go away until next time. Totally ignoring makes it go away until next time. Doesnt seem to effect how anything functions but it's ridiculously annoying getting prompts for no reason whatsoever.

None of this started until roughly 9.1 and has continued in 9.2, 9.2.1 and even in 9.3 beta.

Does anyone know the cause of this?

It started happening to me after a restore I did a couple of days ago. It was asking for the password for iCloud backup. I turned off iCloud backup. Let's see what happens tomorrow morning.

I had this since around 9.1 as well. Seems to get better on each subsequent release and on 9.3 I virtually never see it. Being offline too long seems to trigger it for me.

It happened a few times while on 9.1. With 9.2 and (while I was on 9.2.1 beta) it happened the most. Today was the first time on 9.3 in the 9 or so days I've been on it that it popped up. For one of my family members though it's very often and has been on all versions (no beta just official releases) since 9.1 as mentioned in my original post a minimum 2-3 times weekly and sometimes even 2-3 times in a single day.

You say you only notice it when being offline for a while. But on my phone and a family members phone it's 100% random it seems.

I have been asked for phone password randomly in that touch ID won't work but haven't seen the AppleID request such as in your screenshot. Wonder if its 2-factor auth issue? I don't currently use 2-factor so wonder if that has something to do with it.

I do not have 2-factor set up either. Neither does my family member. So can't be that.

It doesn't seem to ever effect how anything functions. All iCloud stuff works and so on. It's just asking from time to time or in some cases a bunch of times. Which is strange and annoying (when it's often)

I've been experiencing the same issue for the past few weeks, I've never entered my Apple ID password this many times in my life. At least half of the times I was asked to enter the password was when I plug in the power cord. It was extremely annoying. After I read about people reporting accounts being hacked I thought it might be someone was trying to hack into my account but I've never got any emails from apple regarding suspicious activities. As a precaution and hoping to resolve the password issue I turned on 2-step verification, the problem seems to be resolved.

Being asked to enter the unlocking passcode to activate Touch ID is another issue, it's like my devices have been secretly restarting themselves when I was sleeping. I experience this a lot with earlier iOS 9 versions, it was supposed to be fixed with one of the updates but I still have the problem, only less often.

*UPDATE*

So I had sent feedback shortly after I made this thread and yesterday I got a response back from Apple.

They've gotten me to install a profile that will track and take logs the for the next time the Apple ID pop happens again. So I can send them the logs and hopefully find a solution as to why and hopefully fix this.

Just waiting for the pop up to happen again and will be sending off the logs to them.

iCloud backup is broken I think. My wife's phone, my co worker's phone are all displaying the same password prompts. As noted I turned my icloud backup off and haven't seen the prompt since.

I'm not entirely sure it's tied to the iCloud backup issues quite a few are having. Because I've gotten the pop up on every version since 9.1 (happened more on 9.2 and 9.2.1) and only once so far on 9.3 (the screenshot in my original post was the time on 9.3) and my iCloud backup has always worked (the automatic and manual "back up now")

I've never even seen the pop up happen on an iPad. My family member who gets this pop up a lot on his phone doesn't get a single one on his iPad.

Anyways. It happened to me again yesterday and I sent off the logs that Apple told me to send from the extra profile they had me install that debugs for Apple ID authentication logins. Fingers crossed I did everything correctly and got them the logs they need to help figure this all out.

I fixed this by just removing the iCloud account. Restarting the phone then re adding & it hasn't happened since on either of the two devices it was happening on.
