I got a new HP Elite E231i (23") monitor for Christmas.
My Macbook Pro is 13" and has a 16:9 ratio. As soon as I plug in the Elite monitor (which has the same ratio) - the aspect ratio on my Macbook shrinks and the ratio on the monitor is stretched out of proportion. Please can someone advise me how to remedy this? Thanks in advance.

If extending your desktop doesn't work for you (see previous reply), you can try using your new monitor and the MacBook Pro in clamshell mode. The only problem with clamshell mode is that you'll need an external keyboard and mouse/trackpad. But that will cause the HP to operate at its native resolution.

Go to Display preferences. Set it to extend your desktop instead of mirroring your desktop.
Hi mfram thanks for that, it helped!! Took a lot of fiddling but I finally worked it out. Cheers!

Thanks shscag, I don't know what clamshell mode is but will look it up, I have it working well now. Cheers!

Clamshell mode is when your laptop is closed.
As shscag says, you will need a seperate keyboard and mouse though.
