OK, so I use handbrake with the apple tv preset to rip my DVDs for my Apple TV but can not quite figure out one thing. When I rip a full screen version of a DVD using the Apple TV preset on Handbrake the quality and everything is great but it has the black bars on the left and right of the screen and is essentially playing in 4:3 aspect ratio. When I do the same with a Widescreen DVD it is fine.

I do understand the difference between widescreen and full screen, but I am just confused because when I play the full screen DVD in my DVD player it plays on my widescreen tv just fine without the black bars on the sides. I guess it is taking the content and filling the screen with it. I do of course have to play with the TV's display settings to get the picture to look right after the picture is stretched, but at least it does not have the black bars on the sides.

Is there anything that I can do to keep handbrake from applying the black bars to the sides of the picture when it rips it in?

:apple:TV is only 16:9 for it's output, hence 4:3 content will be pillar boxed (black bars on the side).

I believe it to be a nauseating to see people "stretch" 4:3 content to 16:9 (which a lot of people with expensive HD systems still do...). Spend all that money on an expensive system and then watch a distorted picture...

Not to mention those ignorant "home theater" installers. One of the richer guys at church had a system installed - a nice 60" DLP rear projection set and fancy expensive surround sound. They hooked up the HD cable, but the SD cable section, VCR, and DVD, are all just regular video hookup "stretched" to 16:9, not to mention the programmable remote only works the cable box...
(funny, so DVDs in 16:9 letterbox is even further stretched on his system...)

(sorry for the ranting - but at least I didn't have to start a thread on it).

Yeah...I hate is when people talk out of their asses and do stupid stuff.

My example is that the guy who came to install my cable when I moved to Florida insisted that my 65" DLP would suffer from burn-in if I decided to leave the bars on the sides for SDTV.

Idiots I say.

Don't have a DLP - do those have burn in? I have a front projection LCD instead... the guy had one of those rear-projection DLPs...

"It's the mirrors." :p sorry, couldn't resist

LOVE DLP... absolutely the best picture I've seen. Only thing I dislike about my Samsung DLP is the half-second input delay while I'm playing the PS3... Makes it nearly impossible to play a good game of Guitar Hero III.

DLP is neat but LCoS blows it away.

Check out the Sony SXRD XBR Grand Wega series. The only picture I can think of that's better is the Sony Trinitron WEGA XBR HD cathode ray tube. But then there isn't a flat on the market that can come close to a CRT for color, clarity, contrast... and colossal weight. :D
