Hi guys,

I've just had a look at my storage on my Mac Pro and need help deciphering it please. From the data below, it seems I have a lot of movies stored, however, I've checked my Movies folders and I don't have any at all stored on 'Mac pro'. I do have a few on 'Media'. And none at all on 'Media II'. So why does it show as me having used storage for Movies?

This category assignment is bit arbitrary. MacOS may consider some file types "movies" even though you may not. Also, this accounting does not care where the files are located.

Did you try clicking "Manage"? That should let you see some of the files in question.

great suggestion - recently my MBP suddenly got full and it was easy to clear about 200 g of duplicates and unwanted video files and moved one of my Picture libraries to an external drive.

I used the "manage files" then clicked "reduce clutter" and was able to see all the largest files - can be sorted by "size" or "kind"

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I'm on El Capitan so don't have the Manage option.

I used to frequently use an App Store app called Spacie (it's not 64 bit, so I can't use it anymore)... it worked great for quickly homing in on where your storage was being used. There are several similar apps available.

Take a look at Daisy Disk. It will show you exactly where all files are located on your five. It’s does cost a couple bucks but we’ll worth it IMO. If you want a free version, Disk Inventory X does the same but doesn’t have as “pretty” of a view showing where files are stored.
