Hi All,

So I’m sure I’m not alone with this. Getting ready to work from home. I have a back up laptop if needed, but a friend lended me a desktop that will make it easier. Only downfall is, it takes a hard wired connection and can’t use WiFi. I have an access point from Time Warner (now Spectrum) and Spectrum said they are hard to find these days cause they don’t use them. i am hoping they can find one to replace, but if not, what are my options? My modem is downstairs and that’s why I have the WiFi extender so I can use internet on the second floor. I have used an Ethernet connection through that access point in 2015, but since i upgraded to Spectrum, I assume the ports are either shot, or it doesn’t work.

Can I buy a USB WiFi adapter and use it instead of an Ethernet connection? Will it work? I hope so, cause then I can cancel my spectrum appt and just be up and running.

Thanks!!

What sort of desktop are we talking about here? Broadly I can say that WiFi dongles are available for most desktop computers. Some come with an antenna, eg. https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-1200...coding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=SZQSHSARTPN18S8XVNY6

MODS - I see this is moved to Mac. I forgot to mention this is a PC and not a Mac. Can it be moved to the right area? Thanks!

The desktop is a PC - Windows 10. It is a work computer so hence no WiFi. i assume I’d have to say a driver is needed for the receiver?

i got lost, does your all in one box, the one in the basement, they usually have (4) ethernet ports.
tell us it has 4 ethernet ports. In the long run you really should move your all in one wifi box up stairs to the center of your house apartment.

some diy necessary:
measure, buy a long ethernet cable, hewever rout it up stairs to your temporary desk top

no diy:
goto newegg.com or amazon and buy a usb ethernet adapter. should be fast enough for the work at home situation.

Yeah, I went to Office Depot and was lucky enough to get a USB wifi adapter. Everything works great. Wish I had knew that instead of wasting a few days with the ethernet situation.
