So about a week ago i decided to finally pull the trigger and get me an ASUS ProAart PA278QV monitor which is 27" and 2560x1440. I really like it because it was affordable and I enjoy the design etc. But only now I'm realising that the resolution at which I'm using it is fixed to 1080p, and I'm kinda regretting getting it. My use case scenario is mostly content consumption and some photo and video editing, but I don't know if I should keep it, or return it and splurge on a 27" 4k display.

Should I keep this and keep working on 1080p? or would a 4k monitor work better with Mac OS? 🤔

Yes

Yes

Sorry can't be more helpful other than to say I was somewhat in your shoes with a 27" Dell (not as nice as the ProArt) that I did return after a week or so... then got the Studio Display when Best Buy had it on sale. My use case is also similar to yours.

Have you tried it at standard resolution? I read somewhere that 2560 X 1440 27" at its native resolution is supposedly half-Retina, and would give you a better visual experience than 1080, though the OS elements might be a bit small for your tastes. I have a 3440 X 1440 34.5" widescreen Asus ProArt monitor that I use at native resolution, and it looks great to me. I sit between 22-25" from it, which factors in.

Having said that, if you want to upgrade your monitor to 4K, there are lots of reasonably priced options out there.

27" 4k is better. No way around it.

"Looks like 1080p" will be razor-sharp, because of the 2:1 scaling in both the vertical and horizontal.

Even scaled resolutions will be quite clear (though not as good as above).

I'd also suggest using "BetterDisplay". There's the free version and the paid version (same app). Free version is probably "all you need".

With BetterDisplay, I set my 4k Dell Ultrasharp to 2048x1152, HiDPI, 60hz and to my old eyes, it looks as sharp as the 1080p setting, but gives me just a little more screen space.
