2x motherboard 6pin is usually sufficient, but you could also use additional molex connectors for a safer power supply. There are various threads here about your options.
Btw, be aware that the 280X will be crippled by a nasty power management bug in your 3,1 (unless you're running a really old OS), so you'll have to remove some system files as a workaround.

With my 2012 Mac Mini it seems like it kills my Mac Pro with my R9 280X on export of H264 and export to DVD. Is this due to Intel Quick sync?
Looks like I am better off selling my Mac Pro as it will just slow me down when compared to the Mini. Should have done more research.

Also, i highly doubt that your GPU was used in exporting. What program are you using?
