Asus T100TA - Any Takers?

I have seen mention of this device in some threads but don't know if anyone owns it and I am seeking opinions on it.

Too good be true for the price with a keyboard and Office?

Had the older windows RT version but returned it. Device wise it was solid. I didn't love the way the tablet and keyboard connected as over a short time it loosened up. However if the new ones have full blown office 8 then I might reconsider owning one.

I highly considered it, but I need a stylus/digitizer so am waiting for the thinkpad tablet 3. The t100 reviews I've read say it's a pretty incredible little tablet, when you see youtube vids of it running high end desktop games like Crysis then you know the revolution has arrived.

I think the weak points might be it has a bit of a cheapie build to it, and the low screen resolution. Although I think retina displays and higher density displays are incredibly overhyped and MS has their clear type technology for text which is pretty amazing, so it's probably not that much of a downfall.

Asus has horrible QC so I would avoid them like plague.

My fiance has one. She got it to replace her iPad and is a software engineer. So being able to code on the go if necessary is a huge plus.

The biggest downsides are the trackpad and charging time. But the charging time isn't a huge deal since the battery itself lasts so long.

It is great having full windows on a small devices. The desktop takes some getting used to on that small of a screen. As does the keyboard. But overall for the price, it is a very handy and capable device.

I was at a Microsoft Store yesterday and they had the price posted at $299, unsure the amount of storage but I assume it would be for the 32kb. The store was packed so I did not get a chance to ask. If it is for 64kb, that is really to good to be true but I will definitely try one.

I've owned one for about a month now and absolutely love the device. I have the 64gb model with a 64gb micro-sd card and have been downloading Steam games like crazy thanks to the steam sale.

What specific questions do you have?

The keyboard works great if you don't have huge hands or sausage fingers. I have average sized hands and I've never felt cramped using it.

The touchpad is there and functions, but it's not the best. It's a nice alternative though, but I prefer to have a mouse handy.

Port wise, there is a USB 3.0 port on the keyboard as well as a Micro USB and Micro HDMI port for video. Coming from an iPad/iPad mini, it's so refreshing to be able to just plug something in like a USB drive or Xbox 360 controller and just have it work.

Again, this tablet/laptop has been great for me. I've owned iPad's and iPod Touches since they were first released and grew tired of the constraints that I had to work around. I wanted something more that I could actually use for productivity, whether it was office or using remote desktop to connect to work and this tablet does it for me.

If I can get it for $299, I would jump on it. Microsoft stores were all out of stock in my area shortly after it was discounted. They don't carry the 32GB model only 64GB so that price for it is quite enticing IMHO.

I do not have any questions specifically right now about it. I toyed with it yesterday at one of their stores. Best Buy doesn't have it on display yet in my area but they want $349 for 32GB model which is aplenty at their locations.

A little late to this party but here's my feedback after about 3 weeks with mine.

I love it. I've had an iPad 1, 2, 4 (wife now owns) and a Mini 1 (which I still have). I also have had numerous Android tablets.

But for what II do on a tablet, this one is easily the best so far. I use my tablets primarily as portable web surfing boxes, about 80% I'd say. The rest is similar reading type activities - Facebook, Flipboard, Kindle, Reddit (reader apps), etc. Email/Calendar, some light video (Netflix/Plex), and a few light games pretty much rounds out my tablet usage.

The Asus is the best portable web browsing tablet I've ever had simply because it is a REAL PC, with a full PC level browser (Chrome) running on it. All my extensions, no tab reloading, downloading, uploading, etc. It's all there and it all just works.

Now the device isn't perfect, it does charge slowly, though after a recent BIOS update it goes from dead empty to full in about 4.5 hours so not too bad. It's cheaply made, slippery as a bar of soap, and the trackpad is only passable. The screen isn't a bright as some, but resolution wise it's fine for my usage and old eyes.

It's fast as my Core i3 Lenovo (which I gave to the wife when I got this), lasts over 10 hours on battery, cost $349 (64GB) and for the first time in my tablet using life I don't ever think that "I'll work on that when I get back to my PC" - cause I'm already ON my PC.

Fun times to be a tech geek!
