The ASUS lid if fugly. I would never buy that. If it had a less gaudy lid it would be much nicer. It looks like a cheap half-assed imitation of the Air. The Acer looked more appealing at first glance.

Spec-wise the 13" base model is appealing though

What is ugly about the lid?

The problem Apple has like all all those ultrabooks the ASUS is based on a intel patent just like the MacBook Air ,which make it near impossible to make those ultrabooks look a lot different to the MacBook Airs
the Asus is going on sale in France starting at €799 while the MacBook Air starts at € 949

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultrabook

intel was clever , no matter which ultrabook sells best , they make profit, but for Apple it means now the customer decides if he wants Windows7 or OSX , spec are basically identical and and designs only differ slightly , and Asus , Lenovo and Toshiba have a good reputation in terms of producing quality , so no cheapish made clones we see here .
i prefer the look of the Lenovo , but for practicallity i would choose the Toshiba with a backlit keyboard , especially the the ports on the back , reminds me of the first PowerBook G4's Magnesium models , but i dont need a ultrabook

dont know if it was such a good idea to start the lawsuit against Samsung because Samsung is now a bit angry , because Apple had freely used patents of Samsung , due to the fact Samsung was not interested in taking any actions , after all Samsung and Apple had a nice business relationship over years Samsung supplying chips (notable the A5 processor ) , displays(retina display of iPhone and iPad and is made and the patent owned by Samsung) , harddrives for some Apple products , in total sales its neglectable for Samsung making only around 2.5 % of their sales , they supply Sony , Dell and Hp too

A top Samsung executive says the company will take a bolder stance in its patent battle with smartphone and tablet rival Apple, which Samsung claims has been "free riding" on its patented wireless technologies.

"We'll be pursuing our rights for this in a more aggressive way from now on," Lee Younghee, head of global marketing for mobile communications of Samsung

Samsung is quiet a large company
Electronics
Shipbuilder
Financial
Chemical
Retail
Entertainment
Flash memory
Aviation
Optical storage
Mobile phones
Smartphones
Hard disk drives
and there is talk about buying hp's WebOS , Motorola and some other company's, someone on some new's website was mentioning even Nokia and blackberry among the companies to be aquired by Samsung in the near future and that samsung might even sell rival smart phones at extreme low prices
reason is now not to just rival Apple , but to throw Apple from the throne
Apple started a Battle , but now Samsung declared War

i'm not sure if the lawsuit started by Apple was a bright idea , i think Apple should have remembered the old proverb :Let sleeping dogs lie.

OK both companies have a couple billions in their backpocket and we will see how that war ends .

Sorry for me its like watching children fighting over some toy

Exactly. Samsung is knowing what hell Apple can unleash and Asus is a small fry compared to Sammy.

As MacHamster68 pointed out, I think Apple is going to find out what hell Samsung can unleash. They're a truly vast corporation and could easily match Apple in the legal department.

The main problem since the transition to intel , Apple has no exclusive suppliers of parts any more , means everybody can use the same parts .
if you use the processor, the board , the ssd , the displays to build a laptop under intels patent you will end up with a laptop (ultrabook) that looks not much different to the MacBook Air .
As the market for such device is there it was only a matter of time before the other manufacturers jump on it.

The big question everyone is asking - how soon will Apple file patent violation lawsuits? It looks like Asus copied everything from the Air.

Just because Apple sells MBAs doesn't mean that they actually own any patents related to its design and technology. This discussion is pointless unless you can provide proof that Apple owns patents that ASUS may be violating with their ultrabooks.

Good to see, while push Apple to keep the Air's up to date.
Plus it gives people more choice and those who prefer PCs can get the slim MBA look with a brand they are comfortable.

That said the Air makes quite a bit more sense for someone remotely interested in OS X as it can run that and Windows.

if they use the same intel hardware there should be not much of a problem to hackintosh them quiet easy (needs to be confirmed as there is more inside then just the sandy bridge and ssd , like wifi /bluetooth cards and such )
OK it does not make sense in terms of saving money as the most you could save would be the €150 if you get the Asus .
But if for example the customer wants the Toshiba because of the great idea to put near all the ports on the back instead of on the side which i find extremly handy if you have it on your desk connected to your big monitor and external harddrive and optical drive (there are 2 usb ports on the back plus a VGA and a HDMI , ethernet and power ) , as it makes the desk look tidy.
Stll has the essential ports like 1 usb and cardreader and headphone /microphone port on the sides for on the move
The Lenovo with its anodized coating wont scratch as easy as the MBA

..they are more then powerful enough to replace a desktop , at least for the average user.

but generally speaking, as i dont want to sell you the Toshiba or Lenovo or the Asus .... they all have their own style and personality in my opinion and are not just clones .
Which gives the customer more choice and Apple can profit too , as it can learn why one of those ultrabooks might eventually (we dont know yet) sells better then others , and take that idea on for the next revision of the MacBook Air

Apple has many patents related to the Macbook Air.

Shih walked on stage and promoted a MacBook Air ripoff. The brushed steel, the side profile, etc.

Except that it doesn't run OS X, which makes it an inferior MacBook Air ripoff.

Here come the MBA clones.

Good low-moderate Windows alternatives?

Well, my ultra-cheap Windows laptop is getting old, so, I am kind of looking for a replacement- not an emergency yet. Maybe this would be a good replacement. Things I will be looking for this time include a better display. OK, I know I'm not getting an IPS display on a low-moderate system, but, Apple does a lot better job with TN than my current system did. Another thing I will be looking for is a long battery life -- my current system was bad when new, and, awful now. This is just because in the end, it is easier and almost as cheap just to buy a low-end Windows PC to run the necessary Windows apps, sigh ...

I'm waiting for Lenovo's Ultrabooks to come out, I think they're the best looking, at least based on pictures.

I agree, the Lenovo's look nice. Hopefully they work well too. It will be good for consumers to have a high quality hardware choice in a Windows based pc.
