With the coming of the 3G iPhone, its well known that AT&T is expanding their 3G network coverage... but where? I live in (according to Wikipedia) the 163rd largest metro area in the USA... and AT&T is bringing it to 350 of the largest markets. Does markets mean metro areas?

Anyone have a list of cities/regions being upgraded?

Im curious about this also. I keep on hearing that they are going to upgrade our area (Lansing, MI) by the end of the year, but haven't seen anything in writing to substantiate that. The guy next to me in line this morning told me maybe even by September.

It would be nice if AT&T had a list of the places they would be upgrading in say the next six months. Surely they have a plan?

Wait, I forgot we are talking about AT&T... LOL

i think i was one of those guys? haha but this may be helpful. "This year AT&T will expand its wireless 3G network in the U.S. to more than 80 additional cities, including expansion from Detroit to Lansing and Grand Rapids, which is home to Grand Valley State."

article: here

and they already have the other two, so hopefully we're next!

Do you work @ MSU, and use SAP on a Windows machine? If so, then you were the one. :)

I ended up getting out of the line at AT&T when they ran out of 16GB Black phones. I went to the Apple store in Novi and got a 16GB White one Saturday morning.

What did you get?

The way I found out was asking the manager at the AT&T store. According to him, the rollout to Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, IA is supposed to be complete by October (currently there's no 3G in the entire state). From what I heard they're focusing on the top 350 or so major metropolitan areas, so if you check to see if your city is in the top 350 that should tell you if you're included this year.

yeah lansing is 106 or something last time i checked. which is above other cities here that already have it. that's the only thing that's confusing me.

By largest markets, at&t means where they have the most customers, not largest US markets. I would expect the at&t 3G network to grow organically, from tower to tower expanding out from the major cities, but with some random starts, like Billings, MI or Des Moines, IA. Also, not only does at&t have to upgrade the towers to 3G but they have to upgrade the data paths going to the towers, something that in some markets may take a lot of time or be prohibitively expensive.

Well now that are all all signed up for that new 3G data plan - without 3G service, lets hope it comes along soon.

There has been a lot of AT&T activity recently at the cell tower by the Jolly Rd overpass on US 127, so I was HOPING that maybe that meant something.

So far, the only 3G I have seen was when I picked up my phone Saturday morning in Novi. I will say the internet was faster, but 3G quickly returned to EDGE as I got closer to Brighton on I96...

Yes, my husband just told me his phone says 3g (non iPhone) so I may go pick up a 3g iPhone now.

We live in Lansing.

Between two cities

I'm not sure what would be better for my situation. I live in an incorporated area of a city which doesn't have 3G coverage so even if the city got 3G coverage I might still be out of range. The nearest city currently with 3G coverage is Indianapolis and it extends out pretty far. So far in fact that I live only 7 miles away from where their 3G coverage ends. I might be better off if they just extended coverage out from Indy rather than add the city I am closer to. From where the AT&T 3G coverage map places the center of Indianapolis' coverage to its northeastern most boundary is a distance of nearly 22 miles.
I am impressed with the data rates within the boundaries and hope they do something to allow me to enjoy it. The data rates on their Edge network are dismal. Luckily, my city has a city-wide wireless network and I can access it from my home since I don't have a wireless network at home.
