AT&T cancellation policy

Hi,

Got a question about AT&T's cancellation policy's for the iPhone.

I'll be staying in the US for some time but I don't know in advance if I will need a 2-year service contract.

What will happen if I'll cancel with AT&T after lets say 6 months? I Know I'll have to pay the 175 cancellation fee but that won't be a problem. It would be a problem if I can't cancel or if I'll have to turn in my iPhone.

Any experiences, iPhone or iPhone 3G, are welcome.

The only time you have to return your phone is if you cancel within the first 30 days, thus voiding your contract. Otherwise, the ETF is there to cover the cost of the subsidy.

If you stay with themfor 6months you will pay $175(ETF) - $5 * 6(-$5 for each month you stay with them on your early termination fee.)

So it's really $175 - $30

What about previous information that an iPhone without contract requirements would cost 599 for the 8Gb version and 699 for the 16Gb version. What would the market for a phone like that be?

That's only speculation, i doubt Apple will ever release an Iphone without contract in the USA. You can buy an Iphone with no contract from Europe but i wouldn't since it's around 500 euro for the 8GB and 600 euro for the 16GB. Translated that to $ and it's a lot of $$$$$$.

AT&T has announced plans to release a no-contract phone. (Still locked to AT&T though).

Oh i see, do you think that will be more expansive compared to the only method right now to get out of the contract or less?

If I recall correctly, I think they're going for $599/$699.

So yes, its probably cheaper to go the contract-termination way, there's just less hoops to jump through.

If that possibility will be introduced that would be fine with me. Anyone any guesses on when AT&T will release the no-contract phones? Would that be possible by the end of august?

Hi..I don't know if this message is too late 4 you..but not many people know this rule which exists on Verizon, and I'm sure AT&T has it too..If you are leaving the country for good, and can provide proof of it, you do not have to pay the $175 early termination fee..

Verizon has it and am pretty sure AT&T will too, so just call them and ask them directly if they have the same rule, and specially reasons liek your visa expiring and you have to leave the country count..so you won't have to pay the fee..

I'm already back in Amsterdam for a few months now My stay in NY was for half a year. For other people reading this thread I want to ad the following.

AT&T's policy if you're not a US-citizen is that you have to pay an extra deposit of 500 dollars, for the iPhone that is. Only after the first 11 months will you be able to get that deposit back, cancel early and you loose it.
