You can read up on it by clicking me.. Keep in mind, these are results by Gizmodo, who like to bitch at AT&T for whatever reason they get, and yet, they have sucked it up and released these results which are consistent with an earlier report that it's not AT&T's fault that the iPhone drops so many calls or has data lagginess.

Clearly AT&T has a great and vast network ready for the task. I for one, have started to think, it's the iPhone's fault that we see network problems.

Also, they didn't test New Orleans, (if it matters to anyone else), but I am pretty confident, New Orleans is also won over by AT&T.

The nation's fastest 3G network. Yes, very true.

Edit - I never blamed AT&T for network problems.

Thank God, finally someone came to their senses. It's a shame that we will never get to see Verizon attempting to take all of AT&T's iPhone customers on its network... The network isn't great, but I don't think there is a better alternative for the vast majority.

Here is my take on the situation. The original iPhone and iPhone 3G had very powerful radio tuners for the phone. They were battery hogs! I have an original iPhone 3G. Apple did an update shortly thereafter that improved the battery life, but also reduced the power of the phone radio a little bit. I never drop calls and have great service. My wife got a iPhone 3G about six months after mine and my son in law got a new 3GS. They drop calls and when we compare bars, etc, my old, original 3G usually has better reception than the other two. I think Apple changed the phone radio after the initial batch of 3G's went out I also think that is why people are complaining about AT & T, when it might indeed be the iPhone that is causing the problems. You take that into account together with the number of iPhones out there and you can see why people might shooting the arrow in the wrong direction. The iPhone is marvel of engineering and a great device, but maybe the phone part needs a little work.

I'm sure the Verizon fanboys will be in this thread soon.
I can hear them comming:) somehow they'll try to say that the test and results were inconclusive or innacurate ...

It's pretty sad when somebody is so worried about discussing an article like an adult, that they try to preemptively diss any comments on it.

Anyway, if you take the time to read it, parts of the test were interesting:

  • Gizmodo deliberately didn't check reliability, coverage or voice drops.
  • Gizmodo used a laptop with data modems from each carrier. Good idea.
  • ATT consistently blew everyone away on upload speeds.
  • ATT was only fastest on downloads in about half the cities.
  • Gizmodo only checked two locations in Manhattan... upper West Side and lower East Side. Nobody could call that a decent city wide test. Happy now, Juiced?

Now we get the flood of questions of, "Whose fault really is it that the iPhone has bad reception in the US?"

Possibly related, I found a in-depth technical discussion about AT&T's data congestion problems here.

Two comments from different people were especially interesting:

AT&T are rather deaf to the best practices of the other 750 GSM/UMTS carriers around the world.

As a former GSM/EDGE engineer involved with the standardisation of the radio layer I am sometimes stunned that it works at all.

They don't apply the knowledge gained in other countries for buffer size and system parameters. The standards deliberately don't give guidence as to the default values (it's a European thing) but the vendors certainly do.

I work directly with ATT Data Core on their wireless network and this all comes down to ATT taking wireless engineers and throwing them in front of a router and letting them configure the network. Sure ATT has some CCIE but the group of people making the changes are not network engineers.

I work with these people every day and they are terrible. ATT Data Core needs to hire network engineers and not throw some cellular engineer to the lions.

This the obviously the fruits of Operation Chokehold finally panning out. Good to see that AT&T was shown the error of their ways and did something about it.

LOL... seriously? Operation Chokehold aka Operation Failure amounted to absolutely nothing.

I doubt AT&T's network is any different now then it was at 12 PST last Friday.

I see you couldn't help it trying to disprove the results. They are accurate and absolute. If you want far more detailed results, then by all means do them, compile them and release them. I am happy Gizmodo took their time and do the tests in 12 cities.

Verizon lost to AT&T in more than half. Accept it. Data is data and AT&T can serve it up good. Trying to hide that under the excuse of network engineering seriously means you have nothing good to say.

Also, addressing the fact they didn't assert voice quality. Gizmodo says, they are not doing quality of voice, only data speeds and in their test AT&T wins. Period.

Obviously, we know AT&T has a good network and that Verizon should shut their mouths and try and compete, because as we can see, AT&T whopped their arses good.

Although I dont live or make calls in US, one thing that strike me a puzzling, is that most of the AT&T bashers on here are actual... well, AT&T users.

Surely this is a better indictment of cellular coverage and performance rather then some 3rd party, xeno like entity, rather like the (much unfounded) MS hating that goes on here.

I would think that Verizon users simply... dont care?? Am I mistaken? Enlightenment?

Verizon's spokesperson is here.

A lot of them are Verizon shills.

Man, you are one delusional person. Do you really think there were enough goons who participated in what is nothing more than a tantrum to cripple a network?

No, I and have been with AT&T/Cingular for 9 years. With Verizon before that. Sorry to say that AT&T has served me only marginally well. This past weekend I've logged over 12 dropped calls. I also took and made about 20 dropped calls. I call this an isolated event now but no, I am not some shill.

I can't speak for AT&T and Verizon since I'm not on the U.S. but I travelled for a month in Europe, used data and voice all over and never had one single dropped call or any other network issue.

While, from what I read, AT&T is not as bad as people make it out to be (since network quality varies from place to place) and people are just loud when they complain, it seems apparent that there are some issues that need to be fixed, specially in cities like NY and SF. AT&T itself has admitted to it.

And I've used the iphone around New Jersey and New York with no dropped calls. What is your point? I guess people don't drop calls on Verizon right?
