AT&T gave me my unlock codes?

Hey all

Called Apple to unlock my iPhone, and the rep (nice guy actually) told me I had either contact at&t for the code, or google search to "see what comes up." I asked him if he was advocating a jailbreak and he said no, but that I "seemed smart enough to follow some instructions online" to get the device unlocked.

After talking with at&t about getting my fiancé's samsung phone unlocked, I asked for the codes for my iPhone 3G. The rep was kind enough to give them two me. I got two separate codes in fact. Problem is I have no idea what to do with them. Any ideas?

I spoke with some people from dev team in their irc channel and they were beyond rude.

The it wasn't Dev team members. Usually its users who follow the Dev Team in there. They are rude because they simply can't see your situation.

The last time I got an unlock code from AT&T (for a Blackberry), they sent me an email with the code and the instructions on how to use it. Blackberrys have a menu option where you can enter the code. I've never seen a similar one on an iPhone. If I had to guess, I'd say you enter the code in through the phone's keypad putting a * before it and a # after it (e.g., *123456789#) and then press Call.

Unlock codes are specific to a phone's IMEI number, so just make sure you use the right code for the right phone. You have a limited number of attempts to use a code on other phones (usually 5) so don't go crazy trying to input them.

I believe the AT&T guy was filling you full of crap. If there were unlock codes for the iPhone, we would have found out by now.

My carrier in Spain (movistar) unlocked my iPhone 3G. They did not supply me with a code.

I basically just called and asked for it to be unlocked. They told me that they sent a request to Apple and it should not take more than 15 days. A few hours later, I switched my SIM with another carrier's SIM and plugged the phone into the computer. iTunes then popped up and gave me the: 'congratulations, your iPhone is now unlocked' message.

I don't think the phone can be unlocked with a code. It probably just has to be whitelisted by Apple.

That may be. Though I believe AT&T can unlock them for customers but has only refused to do this for the iPhone because of their exclusive arrangement with AT&T. Carriers in other countries unlock iPhones officially for customers under certain circumstances, though from what I've read, a request must be submitted to Apple first and the unlock occurs the next time the customer connects the iPhone to iTunes (and its IMEI number is seen and registered as unlocked in Apple's database). I have a factory-unlocked iPhone from New Zealand and after each firmware upgrade, I see a "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked" message, indicating that Apple's servers are communicating with it and acknowledging its unlocked status.

I think its annoying that each time I talk with big blue they give me completely different answers. We gotta get them to allow for unlocking.

Yummy, imagine being able to spoof the whitelist server... I hope that someone is spending A LOT of time reverse engineering this for the community.
