Hello everyone....ur friendly neighborhood at&t rep here. This just in...we received new training manuals today regarding the at&t side of things. IT will be exactly the same as the apple store process. Customers will come into the store purchase their iphone, take it home SEALED in the box and activate it there. You can get a pre-approved credit check if you want before leaving the store, but it is not required. No one will touch your iphone unless you want them to. All customers are to leave the store with a sealed box.

yes 2yr contract is agreed online through itunes. 2yr contract is what actually allows ANY functionality of the device to work though... without it not even the ipod function works.
Our manual said people will be able to buy iphones as gifts. So yes theoretically they can be on ebay, but there will be no shortage. We can order iphones for customers if the store runs out and the customer will have them within 3-5 business days.
This is truly wonderful news if true. It also appears given apple's released info that it IS true. No credit check, no opening of the box, just in, buy and go. The way it should be. The rest is done on your OWN time.

Does at&t have a 14 or a 30 days free trial period? Where I can try out the service and if I dont like it, I can cancel without a fee or pay for the device? Basically get off scotch free?

the iphone will have a 14 day return policy and there will be a 10% restocking fee on the iphone.... at&t's normal return policy is 30
days though...
Still haven't grasped the concept of internal documents, eh?

I have it on good authority that the heretofore-unheralded personal technology restrictions on Apple Store employees are predominantly due to AT&T staffers posting photos of unreleased items and internal memos related to the iPhone.

in the "how to activate" video posted today, you HAVE to be 18 to activate it. If you can gather up the $700 or so to buy it, you'll be OK, but to activate, be prepared to do it under your mom's name or something.
you may be able to walk in a store and buy it...but like katie said, in order to use it someone over 18 will have to activate it....unless you already have at&t...
been with the company 3 yrs...been doing this for three yrs on various sites.... phonescoop... mobiletracker... etc. I AIN'T GOING NO WHERE BUDDY... after my training Thurday... I'll have more OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS for you....

How this going to work? I can pick up an iphone, bring it home and enter into itunes my existing AT&T business account phone number? As business accounts aren't eligible for iphones, i'd bet there are going to be a lot of customer service calls Friday night.

So, you get an iPhone on Friday with the hoards of lemmings. In January, a new iPhone is released that will fulfill all your wildest dreams not fulfilled by this iPhone...
What happens if you want to sell your phone on eBay? Do you think anyone could pick it up and just go to ATT and add an iPlan under month-to-month?
And then...
To get a new iPhone, do you think you'll have to break your current contract or will it be as it is now, new iPhone, new contract? Keep in mind, Apple is accounting iPhone sales over two years, so either this could indicate a solid contract or they think people buying new phones every 6-12 months would be just an anomaly.

This statement about activation is a bald face lie. I stood in line for hours at a Cingular store in Pasadena, CA on Colorado and before we were allowed inside we had to fill out a credit application or else we could not purchase the phone. Then once we were inside you were told weather you had to put down a down a deposit or not for your service. If your credit did not meet ATT standards, then you had to put down a deposit for service in order to purchase the phone. I was very angry when I was told that I needed to put down a $500.00 deposit. Thats right a $500.00 deposit. I was mad, torn, hot and tired. I wanted my iphone badly. So I put down the 500 bucks and additional 600 bucks for the phone. I was told I cannot purchase the phone if I don't put down the deposit plain and simple. I called ATT and they said this was a ruling that was handed down 2 days before the sale of the phone. If someone knows where I can report this robbery please let me know. Other than that I will be contacting the attorney general about this practice in this store. I do believe Apple did not intend for this happen

And did not have to do anything beyond buying the phone. I got there at 7:30, left at 8:30 (would have been 8:15, but the cashier's system crashed). What are you talking about. All phone carriers do credit checks for people buying phones.
The way that AT&T store did it was a bit unorthodox but not illegal. You did not get robbed. You had bad credit and they require a deposit to use the service.
I agree Cingular/AT&T has handled this worse than Apple but here is what your experience at Apple would have been.
You would have waited in line, bought the phone, taken it home and tried to activate it. Since you did not have a credit approval you would have been instructed to go to an AT&T store and they would have told you, that you need to pay a $500 deposit. Then you would have paid the deposit and went home to activate.
You would have come here complaining about that experience as well. In fact the Apple experience would have been worse because it would have required you to go to an AT&T store after going home from the Apple store.
