Hey guys,

so I think i have a unique situation and need your help/advice.

I am student at a small college in Virginia, but i'm originially from Germany. Meaning I just am in the US for my studies. So now I want to buy an iPhone 3gs and use it on the AT&T network. So far, so good.

During the summer, I always come home and do plan on using my iPhone in Germany as well. So I figured jailbreaking would be an easy solution to accomplish that. So my question is, if there becomes an update available after i jailbreaked my phone, will I, after the update process, be simply able to use it with AT&T again. As far as I know, the iPhone should after the update process be locked again to AT&T, right? So this wouldn't really be a problem since I would be with AT&T anyways.
I just dont want any complications from the carriers side, simply because I jailbreaked it for my summer travels.

I hope you all know what I mean and can help me out;)

cheers

1. You need to unlock it, not just jailbreak it, to use it with a Germany SIM card

2. If you accept an Apple firmware update after unlocking, yes, it will relock the phone and you may not be able to unlock it again

3. You don't HAVE to update just because Apple says so, you can let it stay not-updated until the new unlock is figured out

4. Unlocking should not give you any problems with using AT&T

Great!
Thanks for the quick answer.

A short follow up question: I plan on buying an un-contracted iPhone at an AT&T store for those $599... can I set up a new AT&T contract WITHOUT the iphone at the same time, even though its quite obvious that I want to use that new contract with the new contract-free iphone?

You have to initiate service with AT&T when you buy the iPhone whether you're on a contract or not.

So I will have to sign up then for the more expensive iphone data and texting plans?

I am a little lost with all the new tools & jargon.....
Since switching back to AT&T Ive been away from the scene for a few!

Exactly what tool do I need to use to jailbreak only Iphone 3g 3.0?
