When I bought my iPhone 3G I gave my brother my original iPhone. He'd like to use it with a very basic all-voice (not data) AT&T plan, but they told him that even if his plan lacks data, the iPhone will still connect the AT&T's EDGE network and he will get charged ridiculous amount by the KB.

Is that true? Is there any way to prevent the iPhone from using AT&T's data network for ANYTHING, but still have it capable of making voice calls and using WiFi networks?

Thanks!

I doubt you can. But if he'd just pay another $10 a month he'd get the Edge network with his basic talk plan.

jailbreak it (with pwnage tool) and when it asks you "are you a legit AT&T user" say no. this should unlock it.

once that's through, just setup through iTunes but make sure you don't have to activate. if it does ask you to activate (eventually bringing up the $20 data plan), retry with pwnage tool or something. i was able to use my iphone edge without purchasing a plan (they removed this no-data plan just before the 3g release i believe.. you used to be able to remove it under your wireless.att.com account settings). then go to cydia and download "boss prefs" and turn off edge from there. you can also try going to network and changing your vpn stuff, but im no expert on that.

give it a shot and get back to me, i'd really like to know if this works with 2.0+
