The cost of AT&T's international add on plan is ridiculous has anyone tried an alternative way to get 3G in another country?

I don't know if you can get the same one as I have on my iPhone, but if you have a FAN discount, there is an international data plan that is $35 extra a month unlimited with no caps. I have that on my iPhone since I am working in the UK. It's fantastic. Also, I can connect to any 3G provider in the UK. Not sure if this is available for the iPad 3G plan or not.

By the way, this plan is not on their website. You have to call and ask for it. I can check my bill and note the exact name if that would help.

I'd love to know this as well, being that I travel a lot. I do have a faculty discount (I get 20% off my bill, waived activation fees etc.) but I'm not sure if that is applicable.

Yeah I am aware of the Microsim thing but you can always cut the plastic surrounding ;)
I saw the description of this being done, the guy used a meat cleaver. I probably won't be bring one with me on the trip.;)

I'd love to know what this is? Can you let me know?
thanks

I, too, would love to know the name of this international plan. It would be the answer to my prayers!

Ok, on my bill I have the following:

IPH_DOM_INTL_DATA_RZ

This is 64.99 which should replace your current data plan "DATA PLAN IPHONE". Also, the first time it was offered to me, I was told the plan would have to run for a year. At that time I wasn't sure so I declined. After my stay in the UK started to run on, I decided to get it. The operator told me there was no minimum time. So be careful with that.

Hope this helps.

Or you could get a PHS300 from cradlepoint and get pay as you go usb sticks wherever you go. Not sure if that is convenient to pack an extra box but it is a little bigger than your iPhone and that one has a battery. So far I just leave mine in my bag and use it that way when out. The USB sticks would be easier to get ahold of in multiple countries, than a microsim.
