So when MMS 'officially' goes live on Friday, is ITunes going to make me update to 3.1 to get the AT&T update?

I would think that IPhone and AT&T software updates do not have to go hand-in-hand...

Anyone know??

No. You can install the carrier file without 3.1.

Is that "legit" through itunes? Or via the same way thats been going on for sometime with the hacked carrier file?

This is a major thing for me, cause i dont want 3.1, but i also dont feel comfortable downloading some hacked carrier file either.

Exactly.

So if I opt not to update the IPhone software, I'd really have to update the AT&T file manually?

If you update anything through itunes its likely legit.

It will probably require like 3.0, is my guess.

Sure that I get. I'm fine with 3.0, not interested in updating, especially hearing some of the horror stories with 3.1.

Seems I should be able to stay with 3.0 and not have to manually mess with carrier files and such since 3.0 does support MMS natively, no?

Correct. I was on 3.0 and sending MMS fine.

I don't understand quite what you mean?

I have MMS working through one of the hacks..and I'm on 3.0.

Sure. but you installed the updated AT&T carrier file yourself, right?

I'm thinking of those of us who are staying with 3.0.x and don't want to mess with the carrier update manually...in theory, we should be able to get that update and enable MMS through ITunes as if everything was normal and we had no clue about ipcc and all the tech stuff...

LOL OK let me try and articulate better :)

My goal:
To have MMS on Friday
To stay on IPhone 3.0
To activate/enable MMS through Itunes with the software update AT&T mentioned in whatever press release...

No hacks, tweaks, workarounds, etc.

This should be no problem...I would think?

Carrier files should continue to come as a separate update that you can choose to update your phone with via iTunes. I'm also happy on 3.0.1 and just want the carrier file. Hopefully a shift+update and select only the carrier file.

He's trying to say he's wants to plug in his iphone, and download the carrier update straight from apple/at&t. No one that 1337m@cGurU created.

Which is exactly what i want, and hopefully can achieve.

The only thing i'd be willing to do, is download a carrier file that came straight from apple/at&t, that someone posts.

Of course you'll be able to just download the carrier file. That's how it worked last time AT&T updated it. iTunes just prompts you that a new carrier file is available, and you update.

Nothing to do with firmware.

Well, that would be great, but what if you have a FW update you havent done?

i dunno, its all speculation. So we just need to wait for friday, and try it. Then we can discuss how to get around it if need be LOL.
