I'm trying to decide if I should up my monthly plan for the next few months in hopes that I'll be eligible for the next iPhone upgrade at the full discount. Last year, I was eligible for the full upgrade on launch day (after AT&T revised the dates). However, when I check my eligibility now by dialing *639#, it says I'm not eligible until 11/20/2010. I lowered my rate plan this past year and also now get a discount on the rate plan and data plan. So, I'm trying to determine if the lowered plan with discount is what's causing the 17-month upgrade eligibility instead of last year's 12-month.

So, what's your eligibility date? Does anyone have a 12-month eligibility and upgraded last year on launch day?

Thanks!

It would not chance you upgrade eligibility. You will not be able to upgrade until 11/20/2010 no matter what you do. You have to be on that higher plan for 12 months before they will give it to you so nothing you can do about it.

You signed the contract. AT&T could very well say you can not upgrade with a discount until the end of your contract

Strange, I am eligible for an upgrade now even though I upgraded to the 3GS late in the summer.

Of course I am still chilling with the $20 iPhone data plan too! Ha Ha!

I am not eligible for the full upgrade till 6/20/2010, but that will probably still be prior to the new iPhone release, so I'm not worried.

You need to have a rate plan of $99 USD or more per month before taxes to be upgrade eligible every year. You need it for the three months prior to you wanting to upgrade. So starting next month you will want to increase your plan to be upgrade eligible on 1 July.

Read this over and over and over. Then re read it again. AT&T isn't charity, you will follow the contract, however, you had a good chance of getting it early, but you blew it.

Call 611 and see if you can get it if you go back to $100/month, steep payment, but if you really really want that new iPhone at a discount, only choice left.

This is correct. You just need the higher rate plan for 3 months in advance of the upgrade date.

This is how people are able to upgrade every year with the subsidized price.

Do you know if it has to be $99 after the discounts or does the pre-discount plan price work? I get 15% off my voice and data plan due to my former university's group code.

It's been a long time since I worked for AT&T, I can't remember. I'd lean more towards after the discounts you still need to be in excess of $99/month.

Yes, it has to be $99 or more per month even after discounts and before taxes and other charges are added.

Does the text messaging package count toward the $99? Last year I was on the 900min $59.99 voice plus $30 data plus 1500 text $15 for a total of $104.99 and I was eligible at the 12-month mark.

Yes texting counts towards your $99/month charge, as does your data pkg. For instance I have two iPhone, both with data and unlimited texting - I also have a FAN account - I can get a new phone darn near close to every 8 months if I wanted.
