First off, the powers that be at AT&T should be ashamed of themselves for intentionally making this as complicated as possible.

I'm not talking about the simple $199 off thing they did years ago. When they ended that they start the Next program (Not Next Up or Next Every Year, those are different) and it took my forever for them to explain that you end up getting a similar amount off as you did before because they discounted your bill when you bought the iphone through that program....

I do not know why they had to make it that complicated. But if you paid the installment plan using Next you then received a discount.

What i'm trying to understand now is that the cheapest way to buy a new iphone?

I called At&t and the super not-helpful woman on the phone had no clue what I was talking about.

Its what the price of the phone is divided evenly over installments. You pay the tax today and they’ll put an upgrade fee on your next bill.

It’s been this way since at least the 7+ because that was the first and so far only time I’ve used Next.

i dont think that they ever gave a discount to the actual phone through the ATT next plan, but what used to happen was, they'd offer a discount to the Access Charge (which is 30$), which seems that they no longer offer, which is why i went with the iPhone upgrade program.

I don't remember any access charge, unless you mean the monthly charge for using an iphone....? But yes, there was a monthly discount for sure. It was every month and somehow it equaled out to get a discounted iphone.

So I guess they stopped doing that?

Believe it or not, they used to add a discount to your bill if you purchased through them a certain way. The guy who replied after you remembers this too.

You got a "discount" once your subsidized phone was "paid off" or if you brought your own phone.

So it wasn't really a discount. And you didn't have the option to pay off and upgrade early like you do now.

Yes, that discount is now gone. It was kind of a fake discount though, they raised the price and then discounted it making it look like a discount.

I called AT&T again and they explained that was a promotion that is no longer offered.

So... buy through apple.
