New AT&T service won't work on iPhone
June 19, 2007

BY MIKE WENDLAND

Nine days before the launch of the iPhone, AT&T has announced a hot and sure-to-be-popular service that won't work on the iPhone - expected to be the hottest selling phone ever. The service is called Video Share and it allows a person to shoot a video with a cellphone and stream it live one way to a caller on the other end. The two can then simultaneously talk while they both watch the video. It uses the built-in camera on certain mobile phones.

But even though the iPhone has a high quality 2 megapixel camera, iPhone users won't be able to tap into Vdeo Share.

That's because the service only works on AT&T's 3G data network, the company's fastest or third generation data network. The coming Apple iPhone works on the slower, second generation version, called EDGE.

Video Share is initially available only in Dallas, Atlanta and San Antonio (the corporate HQ city), although company CEO Randall Stephenson says it will expand to other 3G cities nationwide starting next month (including Detroit)..

Yeah, I found this a little bit odd, after reading the article. Apple should have included 3G into the phone.

And we know for a FACT that there will be no 3g option in this phone because it's an FCC approval thing and they HAVE to state the service type to get approval, and they couldn't have added an addendum/change from Edge to 3g without us knowing about it - right? And it's a physical thing that can't be changed via sim card or other switchable doodad - right?

I'm getting more concerned about the lack of 3g by the minute.

In other words - there's no way possible that Apple can surprise us with a 3g instead of Edge - right?

if you've never had it or witnessed it, you probably won't miss. you'll have nothing to compare it to. If you had it and now lost it, you might have a little more reason to worry.

Its hard to tell if it will have 3G or not. Remember they just announced the new screens and increase battery life. Maybe 3G has been completed, but not announced yet. We won't know until this item has officially shipped and that is sad. Samething with the data plans, this is taking way to long. Maybe those two things are some how together.

Really? No kidding

I've heard you can't put Nintendo DS games into the SIM card either! WTF?

What a piece of garbage.

I don't anticipate 3G until rev b. i can understand the initial deployment of only EDGE. 3G is a slightly more expensive technology and is not deployed everywhere yet. I know that 3G devices also work on the EDGE networks, but I think the reasoning here is for rev a, let's go with EDGE (which is also what BB's use with at&t), save a little money on manufacturing, see how things go on release. I have no doubt that my 1st quarter next year, the 3G model is out.

I thought I read somewhere here that it's physically impossible 3g could be a last minute surprise. I have to go find that. IDK how the FCC thing works.
Wouldn't it be nice though?

Who says its last minute? Apple changed up the battery a few months ago before telling us. The testing happened between May and June. I think its very possible, that the delay with data plan prices is because of the yet to be announced 3G support. Well, atleast thats what I wan't to think:p

it's verrrrry unlikely. Adding 3G support would require a new FCC approval. this FCC approval would have had to take place before any of the phones were put into production. and once something hits the FCC, the news about it is basically public domain and everybody would know about it. so, in short, it's not 'physically' impossible, but more like 'governmentally' impossible without everyone already knowing about it.

Well...I was going to buy the iPhone on June 29th, but looks like I'll wait until a newer model comes out that is 3G capable.

I bet after this there will be a few folks that will also wait. Not the most ideal news for Apple and their expected initial sales numbers.

its not really news anymore honestly. everyone has known this for weeks and has already either come to terms with it or given up on the iPhone.

Except for the fact that this device has already been approved and has a confidentiality agreement until the 29th. It could have a government approved rocket launcher and we wouldn't know because of the confidentiality that is so closely guarded (rightfully so) by Apple. I'm just surprised the fcc was able to keep all this info in for so long without some dimwit leaking it. Glad though, I can't wait to see what other surprises they have.

Well, maybe battery life is not something the FCC approval process cares about? Gosh - could anyone linkify me to the iphone's FCC info? Or, if anyone has an idea on the requirements and what's allowed for change without further fcc approval - I'm all ears.

I mean, maybe mere batteries/battery life are a different deal than the edge/3g. I'd think so.

As I alluded to in my post, the fcc approval and all associated documents have a confidentiality hold on them that expires june 29th. this means that as much as people would like to tell you we don't know exactly what is in the phone yet. i'm not really going to be expecting 3g at all, but any nice surprises are welcome.

Meh...no 3G, so not suprised.

This whole 3G(or a lack of it) has been talked about to death, here. It lacks 3G, we are going to have to get over it. Personal I don't really care. I get 3G coverage when I got to basicly any store, but not at home. But then again I'll be using wi-fi at home, so it matters even less!
