New AT&T service won't work on iPhone
June 19, 2007
BY MIKE WENDLAND
Nine days before the launch of the iPhone, AT&T has announced a hot and sure-to-be-popular service that won't work on the iPhone - expected to be the hottest selling phone ever. The service is called Video Share and it allows a person to shoot a video with a cellphone and stream it live one way to a caller on the other end. The two can then simultaneously talk while they both watch the video. It uses the built-in camera on certain mobile phones.
But even though the iPhone has a high quality 2 megapixel camera, iPhone users won't be able to tap into Vdeo Share.
That's because the service only works on AT&T's 3G data network, the company's fastest or third generation data network. The coming Apple iPhone works on the slower, second generation version, called EDGE.
Video Share is initially available only in Dallas, Atlanta and San Antonio (the corporate HQ city), although company CEO Randall Stephenson says it will expand to other 3G cities nationwide starting next month (including Detroit)..
