My friend wants to try out the iPhone but does not have the $30/month iPhone plan on her AT&T account, and doesn't want it get it unless she ends up enjoying using the iPhone.

So... What happens if you put a normal AT&T SIM with a data plan into the iPhone? Does it not work at all, or not do data, or just not things like visual voicemail? Or does it automatically upgrade your account or some such thing?

AT&T can detect when an iPhone is on it's network, they will flash a message that the appropriate plan will be added to your account.

Using an iPhone on your account without the appropriate data plan is a violation of your contract. That said, all they are likely to do when they detect that you are using an iPhone on a non-iPhone data plan is send you a strongly-worded text message demanding you contact them and change your plan. They would probably be within their rights under the contract to add the plan automatically, but I have never heard of them doing it.

I was using mine on a BB plan for a while, but I got an email and text message saying that I needed to add the appropriate plan and I ended up just switching back. Too much of a risk to get hit with overages, and the iPhone is a data hog without the plan.

I have been using my iphone 3gs for 6 months now without data. Just get a regular phone and put your sim in that, and call att to remove the data plan. The switch the sim back the next day. Remember, you have to install the fake apn to block your iphone from using data on pay per use. Also several times during the month put the sim back in the regular phone and make a call.

tell your friend to get a Touch, which you can simply return to an Apple store for refund.
